A thread to share, to rant, to grumble...
When you get older it's what Christmas used to be...when other people did the presents and tree and cooking and you were a kid it was magic.
I know for many people it wasn't so magic for alot of reasons...so maybe it's better now than when they were kidz.
It's remembering when my kids were young and the living room looked like ToysRUs exploded...cats running through wrapping paper...taking everybody to my brother's for dinner and who tried to flush the stuffed toy/toppled the manger/trashed the TV room
Now it's quieter, would bring Pookins to my brother's if she wouldn't try to eat their cats...and the kids set up the tree themselves...but I still got that comforting feeling seeing the old ornaments-stories behind them all, a nativity set that's all cats, fewer stockings but that's okay too I guess...finish wrapping, then a week of overtime "ATTENTION_______ SHOPPERS, the time is now 12:00, we are now closed, please bring your final purchases to the front. Our sales staff have a life and you should too...NOW GET THE %#$@& OUT OF THE STORE!!!!"...We will reopen again at 9am for your shopping convenience, thank you for shopping with us...NOW GIT!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Christmas for me is kinda "blah", too.
Once I got married and moved with Jim, it was fun to have our own Christmas once or twice. Then it became kinda boring. It's just us and the animals. We don't even buy for each other because we have all we need.
My mom and bro come down the day after to exchange gifts, but they can only stay a few hours because of their dogs. That day is fun. But all the shopping, decorating, hype, etc. is just overkill anymore.
I think when we have kids it'll be much different.

That makes me smile though, you and everybody who haven't done kids yet, I've been a Mom alittle more'n twenty seven years, my whole adult life and you guys get to start the next generation...amazing really. Getting older sneaks up on ya and you don't see it in yourself except the aches and pains, you see it in people around you. So you adjust the holidays accordingly, maybe hubby and I can travel for the holidays someday, who knows??? Something positive this Christmas...my niece is engaged, early 30's, successful business, new condo...sad to say that except for my oldest son and his business ventures she's the most well adjusted of my Dad's seven grandkids. I wrote a special note about how proud her grandma and great-grandma would be of her and giving her the diamond earrings passed down from them...spirit of the season ya know????

My husband I have no children except for our beloved fur babies and in the past few years we stopped decorating or getting a tree. I will miss the family gathering with my mom, brother, his wife and my nieces and 6 great nieces/nephews which is usually funny because someone always gets in a fight over something stupid. I consider our family happily dysfunctional lol. I will be working 48 hours straight because people are refusing to work. Starting early xmas eve and ending the morning after xmas. I love paying it forward with gifts to the clients and showing I care for them as if they were my family. They have no family or they are elderly and don't come to see them but the staff that cared for them. At least that is the way it used to be when I first started working there. People fought over spending time with them or wanting to take them home to be a part of their family tradition. Things have changed now, no one wants to be there and show them they are as important as their own families. The clients most likely don't even know what or why they receive these gifts because they are severely physically and mentally challenged. But it still warms my heart to give to them anyways.

Christmas used to be my favorite time of year as a child. My mom really went out of her way to make things lovely.
As an adult, I don't like this time of year at all. I am not religious, so that aspect does nothing for me. And I hate the crowds and shopping and mad rush of it all. The thing I enjoy is coming together with friends, family and coworkers (my office is always very festive and fun this time of year).
I do love winter solstice, though.

So today's my last day of work until the 27th. YAY! I plan on catching up on a bunch of stuff the next few days. Side note: the best part of the holiday season is the nut brittle the head of my department makes every year. Most delicious. Stuff. EVER. Seriously.
