Had the puppy love training lecture last night
and WOW I am so so proud of Rocky. I am actually still in awe of his ability to lay down in the "relax" "put head down" position for over an hour. Now he did occasionally do the whine business which is ok because I was able to prove that we all have something to work on and it gave me opportunity to toss him treats when he got quiet. Some find it very cute.
Now for the bad news. The darn director was so into my program again that she totally forgot to take pictures. Not a one. So I am probably having to go back down to get a photo.
Now the long story.
So I have told before about my bad training experience but in case you dont know yet I will make this part short.
After a choking and hanging of my dog at a training class I never went back and moved to clicker training.
I talked about it in detail actually acting out the whole event (not using a dog) just me and my pretend dog.
Anyway the people started coming in and i was getting nervous to see faces I have not seen about town or in the library. Then this one woman came in who was a breeder of Ausies a good friend of mine who was my subject for the human training session was getting excited over a photo of a pup currently available. She then told me this is the lady who I got bosco from. (bosco died as a young dog possibly poison) Now Im feeling kind of nervous about this lecture having people that might throw things at me. Anyway she sits and my lecture begins. We go through the whole thing with only a few stupid questions I was easily able to answer. after the program the lady who is the breeder comes up to talk to me one on one. She starts by picking up the Pam Dennison book complete guide for idiots positive training. She told me she has gone to Pam for agility training seminars and that pam dennison is great. The woman commented that I did a great job. Now at this point we were almost a half hour over and she and I were still talking she looked so familiar to me and I could not place it. Maybe I saw her around? Anyway she had to be pushed to leave as the library would be closing within 5 min. So we shook hands and I told her I would find out where exactly my dads dog came from because she has studded some dogs out in CT. (my dads Ausie came from Ct)
Now I get home to a text from my friend telling me I was waiting for Maryanne's (name change to protect the innocent and the breeder I just talked about) reaction to you talking about Dave (name change) it was Dave the trainer who you were referring too right? Maryanne is the group who got this trainer going over there.
OMG that is where I know her from. She was in charge of this group that had this trainer come. She was there every training session. She witnessed this.
How ironic. I am actually feeling this incredible high. I did it. I talked about it, I got the message out not only to the community who knows nothing about training but directly to the place that screwed up my dog in a second. And then to see how Rocky is now, his behavior his tricks how amazingly he listened to everything. his visits with the people.
I never mentioned who that traditional averse trainer was but if you could not figure out in this one horse town from my description of going to someone close by and getting a reduction in fee for having shelter dog is why I chose this group and my actions in telling the story. If you went to this guy 6 years ago You would figure it out. She had to know. But I tell you right now I can still see her looking at me the entire time and after the program with awe in her eyes a smile and never a negative word. In fact she backed me up with you must sit in on a class before you bring your dog to make sure it is for you and you are comfortable, calm and happy as the dogs should be too.
Unfortunately I forgot to cover some stuff, because I had to leave time for the library directors dog to come in. Wish I would have not allowed for it. He was too stressed and would not take a treat or do much of anything but pant he is a little papilon. But I can now polish the program and library directer is encouraging me to take the show on the road and try to do it at shelters, other libraries or the church.
And Yes I made it clear and mentioned a couple of times that I went for help from the real pit bull from Mary back in 05 after my incident and got the help I needed Mary told me I needed to try to desensitize him from collar fear and how to do it. and that is part of what brought me to positive training. And that I am a volunteer with The Real Pit bull and advocacy work and education about positive training etc.
Cant wait to read the feedback book. And I might have gotten some work out of this. We are in the dark ages over on this end of NY next to NJ. We could use some good stuff. I'm thinking of trying to do some basic training, one on one stuff not charging a whole lot though. Would I need to get some kind of certification? Some people requested they would like a follow up lecture at the library. Maybe a CGC test after they went home and learned to train their dogs with positive methods might be a cool thing to offer.
Sorry if Im babbling now, I just cant get over the idea of you never know who might be there.
