After having my program I have been getting much feedback. The methods I shared are working for most of the people who gave it a try. Some are hoping I will offer them some training help. I am considering doing it. But I dont know if I have what it takes. Has anyone done it? How do I start? Can I do it at my house or is that too risky with insurance and all. Or am I already covered. I will probably make it an actual business at some point as I do need to start earning Social Security credits again so I will get benefits when I am of retirement age. I have been a stay at home mom for 22 years and my youngest just turned 17. I really want to do something rewarding. It will be positive training. It would probably be good to do training at the shelters but one of the local shelters has a hired trainer (whom I totally hate her methods) the other I have to agree to come on specific days and specific time frame and it is volunteer. Before I do that I really need work to pay for gas to get there. And then there is what to charge. To start I will probably do privates only and since I do not have professional experience but life experience, I dont want to over charge. I would be happy with 25.00 for an hour lesson. That knowing me will end up being 2 hrs. My dad said that is too little it should be 50. But in this area I fear no one will pay that. Eventually I would like to take the certification test but I have to make some money before I put in the money and time to take that exam.

I don't have any specific advice about training, but I strongly advise you, if you want to start a business and be successful, don't make it just a "I'm being paid for my hobby" thing. You'll need market analysis license, insurance, business plan, tax advice, etc. Dont try to invent the wheel yourself.. many people have done this and can help you Check with your local small business development center. There are usually free classes on small businesses and/or people to advise/mentor you. www.sba.gov/ Local libraries sometime run programs on starting new businesses too. Stop by the local Chamber of Commerce to see if they have advise. Running a business is not for the fainthearted, so give yourself every advantage you can

I know my husband had a business and hated it. After posting this my dad so happened to call me his agility club(non for profit) just dissolved. They all gave my dad blessing to do it privately and he has been already doing most of the work for the club so he knows what to do. He is keeping the name so he does not have to re register with USDA and already has 3 events scheduled. He asked me if I would want to work for him. Hmmmm he was really selling it like I will get to hang with some great dog people. I think travel and hotel paid for. Im not sure im ready to take on being away for 3 days at a time and I already know one event will be a holiday weekend. The first one is to be in June. So that may be just an opportunity to see what it is all about.

emily have you ever worked agility shows? I would like to find out more. Dad says usually being a dedicated worker means you get to put your dog in the trial and not have to pay but they have had dedicated workers who are paid money because they dont have a dog entered but they enjoy the exposure.

to be a dog trainer you should start workng with Dee on sundays at the shelter, be her student. learn the dogs body language, and training too, normally you have to start out at the bottom. volunteer at a shelter, walk dogs, train dogs, do that until you are good at it, keep doing it.. train your dog, friends dogs, etc.. apprentice under a trainer. when i apprenticed under Sue when rufus was a puppy i was at training classes every night and saturdays apprenticing with her learning the ropes.

At most, if you work, you get a free lunch, or maybe a voucher for a future trial. There are few trial secretaries who make a living handling the entries, equipment and also supply workers, but the only one I specifically know of is in California. (Linda Tjarks)

My dad was trial secretary for his club he is taking it over private. They had one worker they paid. The rest dedicated workers who got free entry fees. They also pay the judge and take the judge and workers to dinner. This will be a side thing for now but he thinks he can make some good extra money. I dont think I want to be away weekends at a time. I just need to earn back some social security credits I have enough I just have not worked for over 20 years so I will not get social security of my own. Even though I paid in to it. Im not looking to make a living. Just a few dollars.
