Found out today that Enzo has issues with power tools.(started last week when i was draining the hose on the air compressor and he didnt like the noise) I was using a pneumatic impact wrench and then a drill both hard cords or hoses. He freaked out barking, jumping and attacking both the drill & gun and going after the cord. He didn't back away or shy away...he attacked them. It got so bad that i had to put him inside so i could finish the job.
Strange thing is that i use power saws, and cordless drills and he has no issues. Also used an air powered nail gun last week and no problems.
Other than removing him from the area, any ideas on what to do?
I have zero history on this guy and i learned something new about him today

My Bola boy used to be like this with the vaccum...He actually ruined one of them. Hed full out attack it. What we did was started slowly...Wed bring out the vaccum (But have it still), and distract him from it then once distracted, wed reward him with Hotdogs (His fav) then put it away. Then wed slightly move the vaccum, and reward. Eventually, we would turn it on, then turn it on and move it and reward. Gradually he just started avoiding it and going in another room when the vaccuum was present. Now Im SUPER proud.....We can vaccuum him!! Hes a bad shedder and has skin allergies so he actually begs to get vaccuumed because it feels good to him. Hes come a long way. Hope this helps! Good Luck!!

I have zero history on this guy and i learned something new about him today For all anyone knows, this could be the first instance ever that he's been exposed to these sorts of stimuli. He's a young dog and the theory that every bit of odd or undesirable behavior has some traumatic prior history behind it is thoroughly bogus. My worst dog with people was hand raised by me and my wife from early puppyhood and freaked out even at my wife when she was gone a couple months. I myself have never had a serious fall but am afraid of heights and on two occasions, once when quite young, was lucky to emerge from rough surf alive. but to this day love playing in rough surf. We all have irrational phobias and philias that seem to be at least partly hardwired into our individual neuropsychological make ups. Dogs are no different. As for what to do, unless you have to work with the "trigger" tools a lot, working to desensitize will be a ton of work that may meet with at best partial success. So I would just put him away with some toy or chewy he likes when you need to use them.

Thanks for the comments on the vacuum. We had something similar with Jackie, but she wouldn't attack it, she'd run away. But we did desensitize her and now she tolerates it.
It was just interesting to me to see this sort of reaction. I would like to see if it is the sight or sound of it that bothers him, and from that may chose to desensitize or not. I like to have them with me out in the yard when we work, but it is not needed.

Harley is afraid of power tools as well. I worked on trying to desensitize her with them and we have had some progress.
I was just going to ask you if he reacted to tools at the mere sight of them? I would guess it is probably the sound but curious what you observed.
