Ziggy has been going outside to potty for awhile, the past two weeks he'll walk out on the sidewalk and stop. He just looks around with a confused look. If I wait he continues to stand there, if I physically move him he tries to run back in the screened porch. If I take him in he stands at the door and cries. Obviously I don't want potting to take going out 3 or 4 times.

pottying will take as many times as necessary.. if you have to go out multiple times that is what it will take. since he is 8 months old have the vet check for a urinary tract infection if he is peeing more then normal.
constant praise when he potties will help him figure it out. some dogs get brain farts at 8 months old.... its normal....

One thing that I did with a stubborn dog, every time he did go potty outside, I cheered him for a 'good potty (dog name)' I made a HUGE deal of the success. My thought was to help associate the act with the word. I also linked potty outside together as well. He got to the point when I said potty he ran to the door.
Your pup is still a pup though, so he's still learning the ropes!

Sounds like he just wants to go lay in the sun. Rocky will cry like a baby to go out, I let him out and he plops right there on the deck. Cooking himself. Its not a good thing. I have to force him in sometimes.

Carolann, I have to do that with Winston and Cleveland... Cleveland will whine to go outside like Rocky. When I try to force him to come inside he tries to play keep away with me. He's a nut.

Yeah the dope will be laying out there with his tongue hanging out. It could be 100 degrees and this dog will want to lie in the sun. He enjoys going and getting super hot then coming into the air and back out to the sun again. The other thing that ziggy could be doing which was a very common thing when Rocky was younger was to ring the bell to go out and he would go out and do nothing. Then I was on to his game. All he wanted was to go out to come back to get a treat. I always give him a small biscuit for coming in no matter what he gets one for "coming home". I always wanted it to be a big deal for coming in and doing a "good outside". So now he does not get a treat for not leaving the deck. It took a while for him to stop playing that game. He still does it from time to time usually if there are guests cause they are not on to him.
