I thank you all for advice on nilf it is working great. she still picks n chooses who she will let approach her. 99% of people she will let approach but every once in awhile she will bark at somebody n i ask them do not approach. i find it is men she never backs a female away. I think i may of been misunderstood about news paper, that was the only time i ever swatted her with it, I will hit my leg or hand with it the noise seems to get her attention, and that also has been done maybe 3 or 4 times when she is acting really bad, and not paying attention to word commands. I have not had to do it since i have started nilf. Yes i do make it a point that she is not hit, or yelled at. ussally just speaking in a normal voice works with her, but every once in a great while she will get bull headed. again thank you all for advice, doing the best i can

Glad it is working. It is best to catch them doing good rather than scolding the bad. They associate well and quickly figure out they like the good. But occasionally I use what I call I mean it now. There are times when Rocky needs to be reminded. But it is basically a NOW! in a growl type voice not really yelling. A plain old Naughty gets the point across when he steals or chews up paper. (he steals from recycle or purses) Mostly i catch him doing things right and reward for it. This is much more effective.

Nothing in life is free. Google NILIF and you will find a whole load of information. It helps when the pups decide to test the waters.

This from the ORIGINAL Dog Whisperer PAUL OWENS #3 explains in brief easily understood NILIF. Why does positive training work?
1) Nonviolence works. How we train and interact with our animals is directly linked to how we interact with each other. Numerous studies have connected violent behavior toward animals with human-to-human violence. The reverse is also trued. Positive interactions with animals promote physical and emotional health and safety in human relationships.
2) Compassion, patience and consistency are used in the educational process. Positive trainers recognize every dog is different and learns at his or her own speed. They formulate programs to suit the physical and emotional limits of each dog. Many things affect a dog's behavior and reliability. These include breed, age, history, health, the trainer's consistency and skill., etc.
For example, although a young puppy can learn most any behavior in a few short sessions, behavioral reliability cannot be achieved until the dog reaches emotional maturity, which normally happens between one and one-half and four years of age.
3)Discipline is the key to the effectiveness of positive training. Positive trainers all use the NILIF leadership model: Nothing in Life is Free. Reliability is the goal, and training is strict, but is also fun. The message to the dog is this: I will never hit, kick, shock, shake or otherwise abuse you. But, if you want anything, you must do something for me first. Want to get petted? Sit. Want to go outside? Lie down. Want to say hello to another dog? Stay until I release you. Want to chase a ball? Go to your bed until I say “okay.”
Positive training also sets you and your dog up for success and safety. It makes positive associations so the dog looks at life as something friendly, thereby removing the need to be competitive or aggressive. Finally, positive training increases behavioral reliability through a strict but scientifically proven leadership program. You begin training at the point your dog is successful and step-by-step build to the point of reliability you have set as your goal.

Going to google it. We have been using positive reinforcement because Molly will act frightened and tuck her tail between her legs like she has been hit or kicked. I hate to see her act like that because she is so mellow and will follow commands like sit, stay and we are working on the “lie down” command which she does most of the time. When we walk her, my husband Curt has her walk between us until we get to the park and then she is free to sniff every tree which she does on a 20ft leash. I wish my Aussie was as obedient as Molly is. Suzy looked for a reason to fight other dogs. She just loved children with all her wonderful heart. But, there was no way we could ever take her to a dog park or any place that had dogs. She was totally evil. My neighbor had a chow and Suzy was so NOT NICE. That was twenty years ago and with all this information I am gleaning from this web site, I feel very blessed to be a proud owner of an American Pit Bull Terrier breed.

Positive training such as the NILIF will also build her confidence . Who knows , perhaps because of the past owners situation , they could have yelled out of frustration and taken it out on her in some way.
The NILIF program also releases a dog from "becoming the boss", in a house , should the owner fall short of leadership. A dog will not follow a weak leader. When this is the case, that's when the dog steps up to the plate and takes control. Not good !
Stick with the NILIF program and you definitely wil see positive change.
