Pit-bull law may come off the books

PASSAIC - Pit bulls may finally get a fair shake.
Since 1987, a city ordinance has regulated the ownership of pit bulls to prevent attacks, with stipulations requiring such dogs to be muzzled and wear a steel collar when off closed premises.
The city police enforced the law for only a few years. In 1990, a state statute said pit bulls can't be discriminated against. But the city never removed the ordinance from its books.
Now, the City Council is scheduled to vote at its next meeting on Oct. 7 on whether to delete the 1987 pit-bull ordinance.
During last week's council meeting, Councilman Chaim Munk ridiculed the state law.
"We can't discriminate against a dog?" Munk said to laughter during the meeting. "The next thing we know, dogs will vote." Munk asserted that pit bulls are more prone to attack than other dogs.
Deputy Police Chief Matthew Paz had a different view: "Just because it's a certain breed - a poodle [for example] - it doesn't mean [any dog] won't maul somebody," Paz said during the meeting. "It depends how it was raised."
