Thought Id make a thread following the PP (Personal Protection) & PSA (Protection Sports Association) training that I am doing with Neva my Presa girl.
This is the kind of work I am personally being taught how to train other peoples dogs and Neva is also being taught in the mean time. Training for these sports (At least the way we are doing it) theres 3 people involved in the training sessions. 1. The handler (The person the dog is familiar with) 2. The agitator (The person that gets the blunt end of it , the one who tests the dog, builds drive, & instigates) 3. The Eyes of the Operation (This person just watches to be able to watch the dogs body language to make sure the dog is not too insecure or fearful)
I have done all 3 jobs. Its very interesting and at times intense. I get an adrenaline rush every time Im the agitator. Ive only been bit (With a sleeve of course) once so far. Its like a train hitting you when they release that dog!
Neva (Who is 6 months old) is in the beginning stages and is doing incredible. The first & most important thing we started with was obiedence. Tought her a soild, bomb proof "Down" command. That is her off switch when shes worked up. She minds VERY well to all commands and learns new commands very quickly.
When we brought her home, he challenge was biting. Not that she did it, that she would NOT do it. Now shes a biting tug playing machine. Its all she wants to do.
She also had very little prey drive, weve built that up significantly.
Neva has such a strong protective instinct that training her has been a breeze. As soon as I say "Neva, get um" shes ready to go. Shes now slowly begining the stages of bite work. The agitator now has to wear a body suit and she does bite. For some dogs this is a game, Neva is a very serious girl. Its interesting watching her work, her genetics show!
Obiedence is mastered (But always a work in progress), she is biting (Very well I hear), Her off switch is well established.
Our challenges right now are : The 'speak' command (In PSA the dog has to bark & hold...She will not speak on command as of now!), Biting the arm & leg sleeve---Neva prefers to bite chest & arm pit --for competition she needs to grab & hold arm sleeve & leg as well, Her focus --Shes 6 months old her focus is slightly better than a goldfishes lmao. Her focus is something I work on every day.
I am thinking about bringing Capone into some of this to release energy. He would NEVER bark or bite at a human but one of the guys that is training me has titled dogs in Schutzhund-- Thats some extensive obiedence & tracking. 2 things that I know hed excel at. Im debating on bringing him to our next training.
Thats enough of an update for now!!
Heres some videos of Nevas first test. This was recorded before we started her bite work & agitation work. This is all her natural guarding instincts.
