I just had a Malinois owner tell me that he knows all about BSL because he has shepherds... Ok, I get that shepherds are sometimes included in BSL, but are you really comparing that to the plight of the Pit Bull!? How many countries have banned shepherds? How Many military bases ban shepherds? How many shepherds have been killed by shelters not wanting to adopt out a "dangerous dog?" How many websites are there devoted to the annihilation of shepherds? How many newspapers only report attacks by shepherds? I could go on and on, but I know I'm preaching to the quire, here. It just pisses me off when people try to make light of what's going on with Pit Bulls by claiming that they are experiencing the same with their breed.

Is that what she did, just try to blow off the severity of BSL by saying, "Oh yeah, no biggie, GSDs are targeted sometimes, too....."? If so, lame. But on the other hand, her awareness is a good thing, too.

He said that I was overreacting and being childish with my comments about BSL and how I have to double check local laws before going anywhere because he never does such things and he has shepherds so he knows all about BSL.

I would have told him that he obviously does not care about his critters. Apart from the BSL issue, if one is in an area it behooves one to review the laws pertaining to dogs. There are statutes about leashing, numbers of critters one can have, immunizations and tags required, and so on, all in addition to possible breed prohibitions. Of course, he would not have understood. If he led out by calling you 'childish' he just wants drama.

I'm not sure what the deal is with people trying to claim their dog is subject to BSL. There are few, if any, laws targetting GSDs these days... I think maybe there were at some point in the past (which is not the same as saying GSDs were NOT one of the "fear them" breeds at one time, because of their use as police dogs). Even Dobes are rarely included these days. Rotts increasingly less. Almost all BSL is about pit bulls, with a few of the rare "scary looking" Mastiff types thrown in so the lawmakers can pretend they're not targetting one breed.
Sorry, GSD people: no one hates your dog and legislates against it because of its breed.
And that list of the supposedly x 100's of dogs named in BSL (including the Golden Retriever). No. really no. If one tiny town somewhere in this hemisphere had some wacked out official who decided to throw GRs under the bus, that hardly makes them a BSL target.
