Just thought I'd share:
Our Pack is Expanding -
Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas!
Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for the support you provide Our Pack. It is because of your ardent support and caring that we have the strong, leadership organization we have today. Our "Our Pack" community has worked diligently beside us to help restore the true image of pit bull dogs - and the work we've done together is helping to shift our community's perception of these amazing dogs. We've come a long way in helping hundreds of dogs through rescue and education projects in our community - and we've helped thousands of people who have needed our support. The people and the dogs are equally important.
Many of the dogs we've worked with have come from abusive situations to become therapy dogs. These high profile cases show the public who these dogs really are - and what their story really is. We support owners and adopters through training and education for the general public. Our Pack provides free lectures to the community through our partner shelters to provide continual support and education to dog owners. Our weekly dog/person training classes give owners tools they need to facilitate a healthy dog/human bond. Much of our work is changing the image of the pit bull and keeping dogs from being surrendered to shelters in the first place. We would not have been able to help those dogs without your support.
I am writing today to raise your awareness to an issue in our community that we'll be expanding to include - and to ask for your support in these efforts. We are starting to work with a different breed that has an equally challenging reputation in our community: the Chihuahua. As we walk the banks of cages at public shelters, we see these little Chihuahuas by the hundreds, and they have taken the place of pit bulls as the most "at-risk" breed in our community shelters. Misperceptions and negativity around the breed (or dogs who have the "Chihuahua" look) keep our public from adopting them. Many potential adopters don't think that small dogs can be trained. They have a false image of them being yappy, snappy and cross. These little dogs have the added burden of being so small that many adopters don't take the responsibility of training or managing these little dogs as they would a larger dog. So the misconceptions continue. We have noticed negative articles cropping up in the media and other journals and magazines.
In essence, we need to help these dogs too. And there is much work to do in this area. It is unacceptable to see another breed harmed by the lack of education and training that happened to so many other breeds in the past. We feel that to be an advocate for one breed, we must advocate for all dogs who suffer from discrimination. If pit bulls are "just dogs", so are Chihuahuas. Our Mission in helping pit bulls is not only because we love these dogs; it's also to fight for their right to not suffer discrimination.
We want to nip this discrimination toward Chihuahuas in the bud. Our Pack will actively continue to help pit bull dogs. And we hope you will continue to support our work at Our Pack as we begin our work on behalf of the Chihuahuas; training adopters, educating the public, and rescuing Chihuahuas. It is only with the support of our friends that we are able to continue our work. If you would like to help us, please make a donation by pressing the DONATE button (via PayPal) below or by mailing a donation to us at Our Pack, Inc at 1177 Branham Lane #235, San Jose, CA 95118. We are an independent, non-profit organization that receives no government funding and are supported solely by contributions from individuals like you. Your support would be very welcome and appreciated.
Thank you so much for all you have done to help Our Pack become the well-respected organization it is today. We are proud to count you among our supporters and advocates. If you have any questions about what I've shared with you in this letter, please reach out to me at marthina@ourpack.org and I will gladly answer any further questions you may have.
Yours truly,
Marthina McClay, Founder
