Started by the cofounder of PETA, this organization aims to create a dog food that will sterilize a dog with just one dose. They claim that they will be using it to feed to stray dogs in impoverished nations to lower the number of strays. We all know the potential dangers of such a product, though. I can imagine the AR nuts going to dog shows and feeding it to the dogs, throwing it over fences of yards and parks, leaving it on the ground on popular walking trails. If this succeeds, how long until dogs are a thing of the past? And what about non-domestic canids eating it and having their populations suffer, as well? So scary. I really hope it doesn't get FDA approval. www.600milliondogs.org/www.600milliondogs.org/index.php/read-this-firstOur mission is to bring a humane and permanent end to the constant killing of dogs and cats in the U.S. and abroad, by bringing an end to the uncontrolled breeding -- by developing permanent lasting, birth control dog and cat food ... food that will only need to be eaten one time to produce infetility. The good news, is that after many months of intense preparation under the stewardship of our Scientific Director, Dr. Young, I can now announce that we've advanced to the next stage in the final development of permanent birth control dog food, and that the critically important Clinical Trials ... have begun. www.600milliondogs.org/index.php/read-this-first/the-packAlex started PETA with no funding, no college degree, no staff and no experience. He played a key role in building the organization from scratch to the point where anyone can mail an envelope from anywhere in the U.S., with nothing more than PETA written on it, and it will be delivered. He is the recipient of the Crew Member of the Year Award, by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, The Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award, and was voted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame.

Holy crap, I just shudder to think what kind of poisons are in that food for it to produce permanent infertility.

Wow.... I am all about spaying and neutering your pets, but as Liz said, what exactly could be in the food to cause this sort of result after only one time?
And not for nothing, what if people were to accidentally ingest it? They plan to use this to manage stray populations, so how to they ensure the strays are the only animals consuming it? i mean, little kids often put things in their mouth, or eat things they find on the ground, or could do so accidentally, putting their hands in their mouth after handling something they found outside...?

Hell no. Good in concept/general intent, horrible consequences in actuality.

I heard about this a while ago and I thought it seemed like a great idea. Cheaper and less invasive that a typically spay. Some dogs who can't have anesthesia and have issues while in heat it could really help. What's wrong with alternatives to surgery? Either the vets get rich doing it (my dogs neuter was around $500) or the drug companies. I never knew it was PETA funded. Now I'm totally doing a 180.
As far as all the initial reactions of no no no, was that cause of PETA? Or you just not into giving medicine to you pups? I know lot of people recently who do not give meds or vaccines and take the risk their dogs will not get heartworm or any other illness they prevent. I do titter test first but I will still vaccinate.

If I thought it was a good idea, I would be ok with it despite PETA being connected (although I wouldn't lend any monetary support).

For me it's the simple heebie-jeebies of what is in that causes PERMANENT INFERTILITY after just one meal? If it's that potent I wonder what else it's damaging in an animal's body. And I would guess something like that would need to be measured - such and such amount for a 75 lb dog, but much less for a tiny dog. It just makes me nervous. Even if PeTA weren't involved I'd be against it.

This raises some terrifying issues aside from the one already raise about what could cause permanent sterility after one dose. What happens when the dogs go to the bathroom and residue of the drug gets everywhere or another animal eats it and a person eats that animal? What about this getting into the water supply when it rains either from the food or from the animal waste? What happens when the animals eat multiple doses accidentally? How would they properly dose an already generally malnourished population of animals (strays) with something that potent?
My god are they even thinking?

dog food that spays all female dogs= NO more dogs.. think about it ames, spay all females with foood and where do you get any more dogs from? all it takes is one person to give some of this food to dogs at a dog show.... and the females will be spayed after eating it.... its a permanent stop to all dogs........ peta or not, its a BAD BAD idea

I think they are just yanking your chains. I do not think that a pharmaceutical of this type is anywhere near actual use, and that they 'want' to develop it? Who cares what they want? I think what they wanted to do, they succeeded in doing, and that is getting everyone upset. But that is their game.
