Has anyone ever come across this, and if so can you tell me what, if anything it is called.
My one girl Rosie does this thing when you are greeting her or speaking to her where she opens and closes her mouth repeatedly, almost as if she is speaking back. Mouthing air, or "talking" are the best ways I have to describe it. She is definitely not licking her nose or lips, just opening and closing her mouth. She has always done this, ever since she was a puppy. It is clearly behavioral and not problematic, but weird.
I know I have seen reference to this kind of behavior somewhere before but cannot find that reference any where for the life of me.
If I can figure out how to post a video I will.

I thought I had some, and of course she turned camera shy when I tried to take any lol My dogs have a conspiracy to only have pictures of them taken when sleeping. As soon as I can get it I'll post.

Does she make noise while doing it?

Not really. It's just the noise of her mouth closing and she kind of licks the top of her mouth when she does it so there is that noise. So they are all just byproduct noises. No whining or anything.

My mom's dog KC (a lab) did this when I was trying to teach her speak, she still does it a few times before actually barking. Sort of puts her head up (looking up) and back (almost looking behind her) while she does it. I wouldn't call it mouthing air, but rather silent barking.

I'm still trying to figure out the video thing. For some reason Photo bucket keeps failing to upload it and I don't have a you tube account.

I've had much better luck with youtube than photobucket. I think it's worth making a youtube account!

Sounds like her own unique appeasement gesture. She doesn't do it when off on her own, does she? I've seen dogs do this, my uncle's dog does some version of this "talking" thing. I don't think he's using a calming signal, he's just talking. Maybe your dog is, too. I would just consider it her own unqiue little quirk. It sounds kinda cute

It sounds kinda cute She only does it when she is face to face with a person and they are talking to her. It's freaking adorable lol It's the closest thing I've had to a conversation with a dog. She even stops when you say something to her then does it in a kind of reply. I had read some thing about it in some behavioral article some where but it was the only reference to it I have ever seen, so I was curious if any else had any "talking dog" experiences. Mostly spawned by the fact that my vet said he has never seena dog do that in 20 years of practice. He was pretty funny, he looked at her and was like what the hell is she doing? If that were my dog I would look in her throat for scar tissue. When I explained it he agreed it was clearly behavioral, just weird.

I think I need to bite the bullet and just do it. I do not like the idea of having videos on there for anyone to see though. Kind of creeps me right out.

You can actually set videos to private so no one can see them without a link! I did that with a few videos!
