The observed heterozygosity was higher than expected for this inbreeding level. The presence of a selection mechanism that prevents gametes from fusing to form a homozygosity genotype is suggested. |

What I got from that was that they are surprised that a certain repeating sequences in a section of DNA (microsatellite loci) of a chromosome had more variation (heterozygosity) than was to be expected given the inbreeding coefficient in purebred dogs.
It has a been a LONG time since I graduated college. I'm a little rusty :/
