Today went a lot better than I originally anticipated.
Darcy had already taken Griffin for a morning walk when I got there around 11am. They were sitting in the shade waiting for me. I sat next to Darcy and we just chit chatted and ignored the dog for awhile. I eventually started slipping Griffin bites of ham. In no time he was taking it from my hand. Darcy decided to bring an older dog, Molly outside, and Griffin really opened up then. We went for a walk, and midway I took Griffin. At first he was like wtf I don't like this and kept trying to get back to Darcy. But a few bribing treats and he settled back into his walk with me... until a stranger waved hello, that spooked him just a bit and he headed towards Darcy for comfort. When we got back from the walk, a police officer pulled in behind us bringing in another dog. It was a purebred Shar Pei. Very nice dog,
his tie out broke and had been running loose since last night I guess. His owners showed up before we left, but they had to go to the police station to deal w/ all that first. The family who owns him is a nice family, they're just poor. I told Darcy I thought I should go buy a bag of food to send home with him. Darcy was already on that, she also capstared him for fleas.
After the dog was kenneled, the police officer, hung around, and Darcy's husband showed up, bringing us lunch.
Griffen did so well. He was shy of course, but he voluntarily sniffed the officers hand, and took a treat from Scott. (the husband)I just hung back and watched how he reacted. He was comfortable to lay down and chill out while everyone was talking. I think having Molly there helped him a lot though. She loves people and she's well mannered. When the attention isn't directly on Griffin he seems to relax, but once you engage him he's not sure what to do.
Tomorrow I will go back and start to actually work with Griffin. A lady filled out an adoption app for him... Darcy showed it to the officer and he said they'd never had any trouble from that family. I asked Darcy to see if they would be willing to do a foster to adopt with him and work on training him. So she is going to talk to them about it. I don't want Griffin to miss out on a potential good home, and I don't want him to fail in his new home because they don't understand why he's shy or scared. etc.
I didn't get to work with Tar Boy. He was just fixed yesterday and they were able to get all the tar cut off his fur. He was happy and raring to go though. So maybe tomorrow. He's a hyper, barky dog, so I'm going to use the clicker and treats to encourage his quietness. lol
