Now that the dogs have access to the whole house, Winston has started counter cruising and raiding the trash in the middle of the night.
Aside from making sure the trash is empty and nothing is left out on the counters, what can I do during the day to discourage this?
I know it's Winston because he got the pukes after cleaning up the pan with canola oil that he pulled off the stove. Plus Cleveland is a lazy butt and once he's in bed, it takes a cat yowling to get him out of bed. Winston is more restless and will head for the chair or sofa in the middle of the night.

Sorry the only thing you can really do is preventative like ME said. Harley is a counter surfer and gets into all sorts of stuff now that she is cage free. It is a royal pain in the arse but everytime my husband and I leave we have to make sure the pantry is locked with clamps the garbage is either put in the garage or put high up, nothing edible is left out on counters, chairs in front of certain cabinets she can open and so on and so on.

dang interwebz lost my post. I find it hard to believe sweet little Harley gets in trouble. Wrinkles pretty well schooled me in the kitchen. Winston is taller and has a better reach though. Just wishful thinking there was something else I could try with him.

Lola is a counter surfer. I once caught her reaching for stuff that was about an inch out of her range. Pretty funny to watch. I find that good housekeeping is essential to keep her out of trouble. If there is anything that once touched food withing her reach, she will get it.

Yeah, unless you want to go into some extensive "don't touch that" training (i.e. set up scenarios where there is food left out, places he is NEVER allowed to take food off of, and reward in small increments his leaving it alone - we can go through those steps, if you want), your easiest bet is to just make sure you don't leave food within reach in the first place.
Yelling/scolding (not saying you would do that) usually only results in a stealthier ninja dog.

Lola and Harley both look soo innocent! Harley is great if we are home but all hell breaks loose when we are gone. I had hoped she would "grow" out of it! Doubtful at this point.

Yeah, I never . I might say ooohhh Who did it? Who got into the trash? But that's about it. I was surprised he pulled the pan off the stove though. I don't recall him doing that before. He must have been watching Wrinks or something to learn that one. We've already moved things out of his reach, the trash though... he got into it last night even though there was nothing of interest. He still had to check it out. I swear he misbehaves more now than he did when he was younger. But I will take these annoyances over what he could get up to.

My dogs are pretty good when we're home too. I can go to work, and Aryn can still be asleep in her room, and they don't get into things. But if we're gone and one of them breaks out of their crate, they will get into things. Winston more so than Cleveland.
