Hi There everyone!
My name is Heather and my husband and I and our two-year old daughter love bully breeds. In 2003, we lived in Athens, GA and adopted a female pit bull named Jade when she was 10 months from a vet who loves the breed and had several. Jade has almost zero drive and was a great first dog, esp. with the four cats we have. Then, in 2004 we adopted a 19 month old dog who had been shuffled from a few homes, lived outdoors exclusively and whose former name was Cocaine. We adopted him with the new name Dozer and he died suddenly (the vet thinks hemangiosarcoma that many vets couldn't figure out, attributing his symptoms to back issues because they came and went for a few years) in January 2012. We miss him so much. He was very emotive, attentive and just a lover all-around. We also found a stray female pit bull in GA we named Molly and potty trained her and adopted her through a pit bull rescue (now closed fortunately bc she turned out to be a crook) and she is now in Savannah, GA as a therapy dog.
Until now, we have always rented. We have rented 6 places in 3 states (GA, MI and NH) since adopting them and although we didn't get to be as picky about our living arrangements and it took some time, we did it.
Since I was a new dog owner, I didn't know much about selecting a dog by temperament and although I love(d) my dogs, I would like to adopt a more assertive dog in the future. We are re-locating to the finger lakes area of NY in a month or so as my husband is working at Cornell and we are happy to live in a state without BSL and close to a few rescues where we can find another dog and hopefully foster a few.
I joined pitbullforum in 2004 and still post mainly in the laws section a few times a week, but I thought I would try out something new as I will need help to become a better dog owner and a great foster. We are buying a house with a few acres and I hope we can afford to fence some in the future.
It would be great to meet folks in the area I will be moving too also.
Heather
