I'm basically telling everyone and anyone who will listen because ya never know - we desperately need a place to move to. Now that I'm starting to add baby stuff to the apartment, let's just say we are more than cramped. And right now it's just me, Marc and the cat. Baby...and dog? Uh no way.
We need a 2-bedroom. Must allow a cat and a Pit Bull. $1200 is the max. Please keep us in mind! We are really in a rough spot right now with our living arrangements.

Try craigslist for rentals, plus local. Supermarket board ads for rentals. Alo rent to own websites and i think homes.com has rental listings. Also consider. Traveling a bit further from your job to widen the search as you might find something outside your travel zone . Like go 40 min away from work and lok in those surrounding areas

Yeah, doing all those things. It's just really hard in our price range. Also, where I work, the traffic is SO bad, that a normal 30 - 45 min commute might take 90+ minutes during rush hour. So we are trying to stay local. Sucks, I hate having to rent and being so limited.

I'll ask around, not sure if I will find anything but I'm in northern NJ so who knows.
Where are you commuting to for work? I know you want Union County but would you consider something else that's within that 40 minute distance to work?

My sister swears by getting out in the area and driving around looking for rental signs. She wants me to move out to Co. near her, but the rental rates I find online are a bit scary, plus finding a place to accept my dogs... She said if she had to depend on apartment.com and sites like that to find a place to live, she'd be homeless. lol Even where I live now, most places don't make it into the paper. It's faster to call the real estate offices that handle rentals, and leave your info.

Definitely a good idea to get out and drive around the area, looking for signs. Lots of people try to find tenants themselves without having to pay a realtor or for an add in the paper so they put signs up outside the units in hopes they can find someone without the extra cost.

Thanks everyone. We may need to go outside of Union County because the rents around here are all insane. I'm always on the lookout for private signs. I agree that's a good way to go; my current apartment I've been in for 7 years, was just a drive-by.

Have you thought about buying a house thru FHA? For $1200 a month rent that could be a mortgage payment on a cute 2 bedroom house that YOU own.... Its something to think about- instead of renting at that price you could have your own place. Some mortgage companies like fha and others can do either no closing costs as they are wrapped up in the mortgage or 3%. Deposit. I did FHA with 3% down . Instead of paying $1250 a month in rent i now pay a little bit more for my own home. Its something to think about. Www.gsmls.com. Is where i found my house you put what u want and it lists all homes in that county at the criteria you list. With the market this low you could get a nice place you own. Dont disregard owning a home

I can give you the contact info of the realtor that I used to find my place. Maybe he can help. Let me look for his card.

The underwriters said they would approve me if I could show my bank statements that I had X amount of money in the bank by a certain date. It was a long shot for my realtor and my broker, but I did wind up getting approved and now my mortgage payments are less than most of the rentals around me

Short sales and forclosures take longer but you can get a great deal if you are patient too

You are paying 1200 plus utilities to a landlord- why not pay that for something you own. People forget that. Use the link www.gsmls.com amd start looking. ....

The problem with buying is the start up cost. I agree in theory buying is better....but then what about down payment, mortgage, taxes, all utilities, etc. ?

There are a lot of pros/cons of both renting and owning. The upkeep of a home is a lot of work and it's not for everyone. If something expensive breaks, it's all on you to fix/replace. But you also have a lot more privacy and security, and if you are really smart about what and where you buy then it's a good investment.

Compare renting vs owning , see what works best, taxes insurance can be wrapped inmtge payment. My mortgage paymeny is 700 a month only, tsxes and ins is another 700 a month so my total is 1400. My rent was 1250 plus utilities so now its only 300 more total i shell out between mtge and electric and cable bill. See. If it works for you. If u rent u need to get security dep plus a rent payment so u r talking almost 3000 to rent a place... Buy and that could be your downpaent on ur own home
