My old friend I had walked at the shelter, worked with and made a bed for, the one I almost adopted for my mother because I loved that dog too much. The dog that spent some time at the shelter got adopted then returned because of her escape artist capabilities. She had a bad rep in the shelter because she once broke out and got herself into a pen where a rehabilitating duck was living. You can only guess what happened to that duck. Spending about 4 or more years in the shelter Lucy has been ADOPTED to a God Send home. Lucy now lives in a youth prison. She can no longer escape and get into trouble, she has a very secure yard to play in. The young inmates who have been difficult have had much improved behavior in order to get the privilege to give Lucy a bath, or do her nails. For really good behavior they may get to play with her or train her. A man who works in the prison came into the shelter several months ago (that is why old news)looking for a dog who would be good for therapy with young men at the prison. The people at the shelter could barely believe what he was saying. But they knew they had the dog for him. It was reported that Lucy is living very happily with all the attention and that she is able to go out in the yard and not have to come back when called and just come back when she feels like it. She has even brought back the gift of a possum for the privilege of being able to run free in a yard so secure she cant break out. I hope that all the years I went and walked that dog, worked with her and gave her affection helped her to be the therapy dog she is today.
My friend Lucy showing off the bed I made for her for Christmas a few years back.
And Lucy showing how relaxing it is too walk with a front clip sensation harness instead of that slip leash that I was required to keep on her too because of her past escapes. I later brought her a martingale collar which sometimes depending on who was working I was able to use with the harness.
I will probably never see Lucy again and I sure will miss visits with her, But I am sure I will find a new friend to visit. I so needed to hear this news as I have had some issues, trouble with my son has had me feeling disappointed, sad and embarrassed. But at the same time after watching a compelling story about a young fire fighter who lost his life on 9/11 just the other day, I walked away with his message of life is short and although some times we can get put through hell, what is this life for? Just give love to all and live each day to the fullest. I am just happy my boys are still here with me and cherish each day with them.
