Roxy's started a new "thing" lately and it's driving my other half and I completely insane.
She has always been "cold," meaning she wants to be snuggled or under the covers at night. She learned that she could come to me and nudge and I would open the covers for her to snuggle underneath when she was cold. That part itself isn't a problem. We don't mind the nudging. When she gets too warm, she just gets up and comes out from under the covers.
On and off for the last month, this idiot gets under the covers and stays there until she is panting like a fiend because she's too warm. She is not a panter, overall. She's very much a closed-mouth dog unless she's had vigorous exercise. So, I'll lift the covers so she can get out, and not 10 seconds later, sometimes while still panting, she wants to get under the covers again!! This started at the end of August, it only happened a few nights in a row and then it stopped. We went away for our trip, the dog sitter didn't have any problems. We came back, and it was like once a week for a couple of weeks, but this last week it's been EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.
And she will do this on and off the entire night. Nudge. Get under covers. Wait until I fall asleep. Start panting excessively. I lift covers, she comes out. Ten seconds later, she's nudging to get under covers again while still panting. I ignore her, she goes and pesters Rob. She literally sits on his pillow panting in his face. She stops panting, then starts nudging him to get under the covers where she will begin panting again shortly.
At first I thought she had to go to the bathroom so the first few nights I was taking her out. Nothing. I talked to my vet, she doesn't think it's medical even though it looks that way.... Aside from having food allergies and some environmental allergies, there are no other medical issues and we have done blood work and every other test known to man on this dog at this point. Her bloodwork comes back perfect. She has had no ear infections, her ears are clear as day and no other injuries that we are aware. Nothing else has changed, her appetite is normal, drinking normal amount of water, energy level is normal, she's running and playing just fine, and still acting like an idiot out the windows when she sees squirrels and deer.
I have zero clue what this might be. But we can't keep doing this waking up 70 times a night to a dog panting in our face and nudging us. It's getting old really quickly. I know we could crate her at night, theoretically, but I really don't want to do that if I don't have to... I guess I feel like that doesn't solve the underlying problem. Plus, there literally isn't any room in the bedroom for another crate. Louie sleeps in his crate in the living room and Buster has to be crated at night because he has a sleep disorder and spends half the night acting out his dreams.
Does anyone have any ideas what the heck is going on or ideas on what we can do? Has anyone experienced this before or heard of it happening....?
