I don't frequent Bad Rap's FB page, Emily pointed this out to me. Here's the newest "pit bull type dog", to further muddy the waters and confuse the holy crap out of people: The Blockhead! www.facebook.com/BADRAP.orgHeya BLOCKHEAD! What's in a name anyway? If you know your dog's pedigree, be proud. 'Pit bull' has traditionally been a shortened term for 'real' (ie, pedigreed) American Pit Bull Terriers - A fantastic breed! Somewhere along the way, people decided to slap the term 'pit bull' on any and all blocky headed dogs - pedigree or not. Silly, huh? Were they lazy? confused? or were they just jealous because they wanted their dog to be a pit bull too? Since we really can't know a dog's breed make up just by looking at him, when in doubt, it's safe to say 'Blockhead.' "That dog's just a lovable blockhead. He might be part pit bull. I dunno. I really hope he is because it's one of my favorite breeds." etc. Blockheads can be a little bit of everything... Boxer? American Bulldog? Cane Corso? Chesapeake Bay Retriever? American Staffordshire Terrier? Blocky! Blocks are IN. Bully for Blocks. Block Parties for All!

From what I can tell, they are trying to get away from the term 'Pit bull' altogether, and instead of using "pit bull type dogs" they are using the term blockhead and just rescuing anything that could be misID'd as a Pit Bull? In one sense I appreciate them moving away form the term and not calling everything a "pit bull" unless they actually think it IS a Pit Bull. But....I think adding another term (pit bull type dogs, bully breeds, now blockheads) is making things MORE confusing instead of less.

WTF is the point! Just call them mixed breed or mutts or dogs of unknown heritage . This insane need to "name" these dogs is making me crazy.

But....I think adding another term (pit bull type dogs, bully breeds, now blockheads) is making things MORE confusing instead of less. well they hardly rescue APBTs anymore... a good percentage of the dogs they feature are obvious mixes. That's the new thing, too.... one up and coming "pit bull" rescue just took in a bunch of cats. Like WTF? They also pontificated that "pit bulls aren't aggressive and if you say they are, you are aiding BSL". Well, yeah, it's true: if you're rescuing MIXED BREED dogs, you need to be careful about breed trait assumptions. But then a "pit bull" rescue ought to be able to identify, to a reasonable degree of certainty, a purebred APBT/AST. Yeah, even without knowing its "pedigree" Is there ANYONE left who actually tries to do that? As I ranted on my FB page: "if a rescuer only selects dogs without tails, she would believe that dogs are tailless". BR is known for only taking in "easy peasy" dogs. How would they know what a dog-aggressive APBT is.. or how to manage it... anyway???

Maybe, just MAYBE, this is a step in the right direction? Maybe, just MAYBE, this means that they will stop calling mutts Pit Bulls. and Maybe, just MAYBE, they will eventually start calling them mutts, again.

At the shelter, I use the term bull breed. I don't know if Snow is a pit bull or not. So when asked I just say he is some sort of bull breed mix. When I talk about mixes, I use bull breed mix.
