I took Tim down to CT this weekend and he said Saxon is too thin and accused me of not feeding him enough. I haven't cut back on his food at all, we have been running and hiking more, but I actually think he's at a really good weight right now. He's 38lbs, was 39 before and I think a little chunky. I posted the question on FB, but thought I'd pose it here, as well. Is Saxon too thin?

It's not always easy to tell from a picture but I honestly think he looks fabulous. He had a nice tummy tuck, is clearly all muscle, and you can't see his ribs, hips, or spine. If you can feel his spine when he's standing straight, I might up food a little to meet exercise, but it doesn't look like that from here. I wouldn't be worried about his weight number so much as how he feels. If, when he's standing like he is in the picture and his head is facing the same direction as his body and you can see ribs, I would up food slightly. But if you can't see his ribs, I'd say he's fine.
I will say, honestly, most people think overweight dogs are healthy..... Roxy is normally 49lbs and she is at a good weight. She was previously overweight..... Like, 58lbs (eek!!!) and people told me she looked healthy then and now she's too skinny. I consulted our vet and she laughed and said most peoples's dogs are actually overweight and most people don't know what a healthy weight looks like for a dog. Dogs should have a discernible waist (from above) and a tummy tuck that fits with their breed. You should be able to feel their ribs without pressure, and in some working dogs or more narrow breeds, you will actually be able to see the last rib or two. All of this varies for different dogs and breeds, as well as for individual dogs and their overall body structure and muscle mass.

oh and the accusation came from Tim, so take it with a grain of salt... he may just be trying to hurt you because you care so much about Saxon. Some people are like that.....

I think he looks good. Winston is thin like this, and my vet said he looks perfect. Since I'm now used to him looking like this, I think my normal pet weight Cleveland is fat.
Megan has some great pointers, and Emily made a good observation as well. It might have just been a dig at you just to get your back up.

I think he looks fine! Harley was always thin and fit and never overweight. However, people are so conditioned to seeing overweight dogs that when they see a dog who isn't fat they think the dog is too thin!
Agree Tim could just be trying to give you a dig.

I think he looks fantastic. I don't like overweight dogs, but I don't like skinny, either. I think he looks very fit and conditioned.
