Since the idea of giving animals like they are objects to our friends and family is something that goes against every notion I hold about animals as BEINGS and not THINGS, I wanted to dig a little deeper and look at the actual studies mentioned in this article. In the mean time, I'll leave this article here: www.aspcapro.org/blog/2013/11/06/pets-gifts%E2%80%94wrap-%E2%80%98em

From the ASPCA study: They found that dogs relinquished to shelters had most frequently come from friends, shelters and breeders. Relinquished dogs infrequently came from pet shops, as gifts and from veterinarians.
So I'm confused, are we supposed to support the buying of dogs from pet shops vs shelters because dogs bought from pet shops are less likely to be relinquished?

I don’t care what any publication says I am never going to get behind giving a pet as a surprise is a wise decision for either the owner or animal!

Michele, when you start looking at the numbers, it's safer for animals to be purchased from pet stores than adopted from shelters.
