Sooooooo im fostering a lab for rottie rescue- i know gsds, rotts, huskies and pitbulls..
But nothing about labs. Can anyone give me breed info from owning one? I. was told they will protect chiildren and their owners.. Any other info ? The lab i have will bark at doorknocks, doorbells, etc . She was used for guarding chickens and goats and the few people i have spoken to said they will protect the family. All i knew was labs are goofy and suck at guarding. Sierra loves everyone she meets but barks in the house if she hears the doorbell or someone at the front door. I really dont know anything about them except they are food whores

My parents have always had Labs and Ive never met a protective Lab of anything lol.
All of their Labs have always been people greeters. Ive never heard of a Lab used for guarding chickens, they are a hunting dog Usually they want to go after birds. Lol.
I think they are a pretty easy going breed. Typically good around other dogs and people. Their prey drive can sometimes get them into trouble. Ive met Labs that are bouncing off the walls wired all the time and Labs that just want to lay around and chill all the time.
lol, Did that help you at all?! Lmao!!!!!!!!!!!

My experience has been exactly as Amy stated. They are typically very food motivated in training and are fairly easy dogs, but some are very laid back and others can be wired through the roof. The other other thing I've experienced is that they can sometimes be rude greeters with other dogs, they sort of assume all other dogs are their friend and they greet faces, which many other dogs don't appreciate.
I did meet one fear aggro Lab, but he was bought in a pet store so changes are he wasn't genetically gifted and his owner was very young and inexperienced, and I know she wasn't properly socialized. I have found that to be the minority, meaning I've met tons of labs who probably didn't get great early socialization but turned out to be safe, goofy dogs.

Thanks both of you, yeah sierra has no do language skillls lol and greets face on. She is laid back and melliw but she is 8. She has highprey drive and also hates the horses lol. She was tied up in a area next to the chickens and goats. She is goid with cats in a housebut outside cats are fair game. She loves everyone and has a great temperment. We are working on some food guarding issues with the other dogs i think it stems from her previous home tied outside with anither dog. She is fine with people and food

I think Labs are easy to own dogs. They can be crazy destructive as pups but once you get past puppyhood theyre pretty good pets. My sisters lab Chet loves all animals and people. But he has no problem catching a rabbit for a snack. He also was known to follow Her to work which was 15 miles away. The first time he did it he was gone a couple days. Another time she got a call he was spotted on the go. She ended up taking her into town with her and dropping him off at her house in town where she would go for lunch. He's about 11 now and is content to stay on his farm, otherwise he has to be put in the fenced dog run.

Labs are just sort of the generic dog, IMO. They don't really have any "extreme" behavioral traits other than chewing stuff, chasing stuff and jumping on people. They're a bit dim, super food motivated and don't have a full switch (would probably keep eating until they died). After having Bull Breeds and Shepherds, most Labs would probably be pretty easy for you!

lol My lab Mac was a pretty awesome dog. He was very well mannered, but he had his own set of issues, like being dog selective and somewhat fear aggressive. But otherwise he was a fantastic easy dog. I think their adaptability is what has made them so popular. A friend of mine has a beautiful chocolate lab that is a hunting dog. Very smart, and enjoys his job but more intense than Mac was. Saying their a bit dim as a breed though is unfair. But I have a weakness for Labs.

Easy dogs are boring, lol! All the labs in my family have been dim. Sweet, but dim. The only one who seems to have her own brain is KC and she's also the naughtiest, lol.
