We have only had labs in the past and my daughter found these people who were selling pitbull pups and she knows people who have had them and got one of the pups for her dad.
The big surprise was the pup was so small. The weather was freezing and we were standing in the cold they did not even have the pup wrapped up. I just thought well pitbulls are smaller than labs so it will be ok. The mom had died and they did not want to take care of all the pups so they were selling them and rest would go to pound. Man said she was about 6 weeks now. My daughter put her inside her coat and snuggled with her and it was not until we got to petsmart we got our first close look. I did not think she looked over 4 weeks old. We took her to the vet the following day and he said she is barely 3 weeks. Iowa apparently has no laws against this. I know it is our fault too for not doing more research and getting more information but standing outside of a -19 feeling day with the pup shivering and thinking she may end up at a pound I feel we did the right thing.
Now is where I need help. The vet also did a x-ray of right shoulder as she will not stand on it and we noticed she will not lay on that side of her body. She has what the vet said is extra cartilage buildup. She is on antibiotics and we will return in 2 weeks so she can start getting her shots and worming done. I have been feeding her from a bottle and nipple but she does not suck it. I basically dribble it on tongue and she laps at it. We are also holding her a lot because she seems to be more comfortable next to skin contact but I am not sure if we should be handling her so much. figured the dish pan keeps her safe from any accidental rolling on her. I also placed a small bear in with her and she seems to like it as after leaving the room for a few minutes I came back to her snuggling it. We finally named her Mercy last night.
If there is any advice or suggestions you could give me I would appreciate it. We already signed her up with puppy classes to begin mid February but I really need to know some basics on how to take care of her right now. Mercy really is the sweetest thing and I want to make sure we do all we can to give her a great life.
