When I first brought River home, I thought she was going to kick butt in the house training dept.
I was wrong. She has proven to be harder than the pug I had.
She loves to be outside, and will go to the door and give a little whine when she wants out. She'll sit outside and watch a whole lot of nothing. Run around the yard with a stick, or what ever toy Cleveland snuck outside.
She has a pretty decent coat of fur, and doesn't get too cold I guess.
More often than not, she'll come inside and head straight to her wee pad and do her business.
I've tried getting rid of the wee pad, but she'll just go to that spot and squat, or worse.
I can watch her do her business outside, and within a half hour she's squatting again. I keep a close eye on her though and as soon as I see her sniffing, I'll say lets go outside and potty. She'll run to the door and go do her thing.
Three weeks ago I stayed at my sisters house for 4 days. I kept River leashed to me, that way she couldn't sneak off and pee somewhere. She did so well. Or so I thought. The last night there, I went to get get my blanket. It was folded up on the floor next to the sofa. At some point River had pee'd on it, right under my nose. The next day when we were cleaning up, I went to fold up another blanket and she had Recently pee'd on that one too.
Thankfully it was the blankets and not the floor. But it still drove me nuts.
She doesn't mess in her kennel, but if I put a dog bed down, she'll pee on it. If clothes are left on the bathroom floor, she'll pee on them.
She also has an affinity for bras. My daughter has built up a nice collection of VS bras. We would wait for sales and use coupons to get the best deal we could. She went from 6 to 2. Aryns room is usually locked with a hook/eye lock. But one afternoon her sister stopped by and unknown to me, left her door unlocked. So River destroyed 2 of them hanging on her closet door handle. Another time she pulled one off the dryer, and another time she destroyed the garment wash bag and bras inside. The little demon has ruined two of mine, both times they were in the laundry basket. Needless to say, the last bra she ruined I flipped out. I ripped it out of her mouth and yelled at her. You ladies will know the heart ache of having to buy ALL NEW bras at one time. Instead of replacing one here and there as needed. So, yeah I was pissed. I tossed the bra in the trash and went back to making dinner. Turned around to get something from the fridge and the damn dog had it in her mouth again.
I took it away again and buried it in the bin.
This is from the Aussie Assoc. page:
“Aussies” (as they are lovingly nicknamed) are very active dogs that need a great deal of exercise on a daily basis to prevent them from becoming bored or frustrated and consequently developing destructive habits. Because of their high energy level, combined with high intelligence, Aussies need to be given a "job" to perform, be it shepherding the children, protecting the house, herding livestock or competing in dog events.
Redbones can be very destructive too, and have a medium-high energy level. They are slow to mature, and described as driven. Did I mention they were stubborn?
I knew this going in, so we have a lot of different toys for her. On decent weather days, we play fetch in the yard. She is skittish on walks and I end up carrying her, but hopefully this spring when we can get out on the trail, that will change. I have read that Aussies are one of the smartest breeds, but aren't easy to train.
Cleveland is a big help in keeping her entertained they both love to play and will spend a fair amount of time playing together, and chasing each other outside.
She has tried to display some guarding traits through food. No one gets to be in anyone elses bowls or crates. Which sometimes pissed the puppy off. She will whine and claw at Winstons crate to get at his empty bowl. When giving out treats she will get aggressive by shoving her way into the group, jumping over the boys, etc. But she won't get one until she calms down and sits. But we have to go through her pushiness first every time.
I will be using part of my tax return to restock the bras, and shoes. I'll also be restocking the toys basket, and will be getting some puzzle type toys as well. I may even use a bag of Kaiha's leftover diapers on her. j/k
Puppies are so frustrating, at least this one is. She's 100% on anytime she is awake. She's already as tall as Cleveland, and weighs 30+ pounds. She's a very lanky dog!
She has an almost constant 'whale eyed' look. Her iris doesn't fill up her eye socket like it does in other dogs. This has earned her the nick name Miss Derp.
