I received a txt msg last week from a girl with a 1 yr old female pit bull, needing help training her. She is pregnant, and needs to get a handle on her dog by Sept. (she got my # from one of the workers at the shelter)
I was going to meet with her on Sunday, but canceled due to the poopapalooza at the shelter.
I talked to her today to get a better idea of what is going on.
Here is a run down:
1. She moved back home with her parents, who are older.
2. The dog is crated in the family room when owner is gone. The dog is "too much" for them to handle.
3. Every time the dog barked dad would let the dog out of the crate.
4. Now the dog barks all the time while crated.
5. Mom doesn't want her to put the crate in the bedroom because she is afraid she will pee before she makes it outside.
6. Has a dominant personality.
7. Bites and fights the leash.
8. Growls and nips if you attempt to remove food.
9. Gets along with other dogs, but plays too hard with her parents 9 yr old miniature poodle.
10. The owner sounds really young.
11. I can't remember everything else.
I'm going to try and help her reign in her dog.
Tomorrow I'm going over to her home to meet them and observe how the dog really is. Then go from there. If I do nothing, it's likely the dog will end up in our shelter, or re-homed with all the issues in a home that may or may not be good for the dog.
It's really sad that there aren't any real resources for people in our area. We need a Mary.
