The dog I'm attempting to help has several issues that need addressed. Trying to find a good starting point
has proven a bit difficult. Jade is 1 yr old, fixed, and only knows 'sit'.
She was taken from her mother when she was 4 weeks old. The idiot "byob", took the mother dog and 4 puppies and left the other 4 with father dog and human.
Jades owner got her shortly after that. Her only play partner was an older pit bull, and I'm guessing why this pup play so incredibly rough. She is very bitey, and not gentle. She doesn't seem to bite out of aggression, but to get your attention, and then just the regular play biting. She will tag anything on you she can get, attempting to ignore it, spurs her on.
Next, she is crated probably 16-18 hours out of 24. With no toys, chewies, etc.
I have discussed the damage that crating like this will cause, and that she's already seeing the affects. Her dog doesn't resemble the dog she had before she moved back home. She was a lot more mindful, and calmer.
Today I met with her at 3pm, and the dog really hadn't had any time out of the crate even though it is her owners day off. She came out of her crate at a level 10 on the excitement scale. I spent 2 1/2 hours with her and just trying to bring her down enough to focus. But I was lucky to get her to give me 10 minutes of good focus time.
The owner is trying to find her own place. But it isn't an easy thing to do in the town we live in.
In the mean time this dog is driving everyone nuts, developing issues and being blamed (by the owners parents) for being an out of control menace.
I will likely dog sit for her in a few weeks. She was going to take her to the shelter to board, but that would not be good. It'll be a crate and rotate thing at home, but it'll be like a vacation for her.
I am so not qualified for something like this. But I'm the only hope she has right now. For now, I told her she has to get the dog out of the crate as much as possible, nothing we do will make a bit of difference otherwise.
