Oh Mary! A couple of days ago, someone contacted me for advice on her 6 yr old lab. She had gotten into a fight with the owners 9 yr old dachshund while the owner was gone. The dachshund didn't make it. I'm not going into details, but I was able to point out what the likely cause so that she could understand the "why" of it. Everyone around her, including her vet told her to kill the lab, she'll just do it again. So I gave her advice on how to go on from here and keep her dog. I also gave her links to a couple of videos that show what a dogs body language means. If it doesn't work, then she'll re-home her, not kill her.
It would be great to see a sticky, or a blog post on how to handle the aftermath of a dog fight. Included in that the warning signs a dog might give us before it comes to that. It's something all bull breed owners should be aware of, but the two dog deaths that I know of did not involve a bull breed!

All dog owners should be aware of it! Not only Bull Breeds get into fights. Saxon has had more non-Bull Breed dogs go after him than Bull Breeds. It would be great to have one that isn't breed specific so we can show it to owners of other breeds and not have them counter with, "Oh my dog isn't a Pit Bull so he'd never fight".

I'm checking out various sites that have information on what do do after your dogs get in a fight. One claims that after you've checked them over and they're ok, immediately put them together again. "Dogs don't hold grudges."
Another site said to keep them apart for 36-48 hours. Enlist the help of a friend to reintroduce the dogs in a neutral area by walking and standard dog intro.
Another says to let them fight it out.
Of these, the only one with a lick of sense is keeping them apart for a couple of days and re-introducing them. If it goes badly, then I guess you'll know you can't have your dogs around each other. But I'd still never allow them to be alone together.

Good idea for a blog post. I'd like to be able to include pix and video though...hmmmmm
That crap about "dogs don't hold grudges" is such dangerous advice. Once two dogs have fought, they are likely to fight again.
