Addressing Dog-Dog Leash Reactivity: A Practical Guide
Dog trainers, shelter/rescue workers and pet guardians are often confronted with a common behavior issue in pet dogs: leash reactivity. Many dogs bark and lunge at other dogs while on-leash, but play well with other dogs while off-leash. Some reactive dogs have never been given the opportunity for off-leash interactions with members of their own species, due to their owners\' fear that they are not candidates for off-leash play. Others may be truly fearful or intolerant of other dogs.
This one-day seminar will layout the genetic and environmental underpinnings for dog-dog reactivity, discuss the underlying causation and provide protocols for modifying the behavior.
Topics include:
•Adaptive significance of dog-dog reactivity
•Understanding the underlying causation: frustration and negative emotional responses
•Reading dog body language
•Decreasing stress for dogs and their people
•Technique choices: operant conditioning vs. classical conditioning
•Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behavior (DRI)
•Management strategies
•Games for reactive dogs: Find-It, Turn-and-Go, Hand-Targeting, Look-at-That
•Using the Play Parameter for dogs who are hyper-motivated to greet other dogs
•Using the Open Bar/Closed Bar technique for upset dogs
This information-packed seminar includes training plans, class design examples and demonstrations of techniques with live dogs. You will also learn how to assess dog reactivity and determine which techniques are most effective for the particular dog you are working with.
