My husband and I have made the gut wrenching decision to send Harley to the bridge this evening.
Many of you know Harley was diagnosed with kidney failure over 4 years ago and at the same time had her first bout with mast cell cancer. Over the past 4 years she has had numerous more mast cells and subsequent surgeries for various types of cancer. Last July after several seizures she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and tumor in her chest. Throughout it all she has been extremely tough and resilient bouncing back when it seemed impossible. My vet was in amazement that she always fought her way back. I would like to think a testament to our bond and breed.
The past month or so she has been having more problems due to the tumor in her chest. This weekend things took a turn for the worse. She is uncomfortable and having a harder time breathing. Our vet confirmed the tumor has grown immensely and it is the right thing to do.
Fortunately we have a wonderful vet who is coming to the house shortly.
Please send her some positive vibes and prayers as she crosses over.

I'm so saddened by this, and my heart goes out to you and Pete. I wish you didn't have to go through it. I'll keep you three in my thoughts. She was a real sweetheart, and I'm so glad I got the chance to meet her.

Thanks everyone. The "easy" part was making the decision to send her to the bridge....now is truly the hard part. Four years with various ailments was a long time and so much of my free time was wrapped up into caring for her making sure she had her medications, got her fluid everyday, caring for her after her numerous surgeries, etc. A lot of free time on my hands right now.

I just read this and I am so deeply saddened by it. Doing what is right in instances like this is never ever ever the easy choice, and my heart breaks for you and your husband. But Harley was obviously a fighter and loved you both so much she decided to hang around a little longer. I'm sure she is running free on the other side of the bridge with all our beloved pups that have gone before. Its os strange how connected a person can feel for a person and a dog they never met in 'real life', but I always refer to everyone's dogs here like I know them.
Big hugs to you and your husband, and take comfort in knowing you gave her a wonderful life and that she knows how much you will always love her.

Thanks Sugar I appreciate the kind words and support.
Like you said it is funny how connected a person can feel for a person and dog they never met.....I too refer to everyone on here and their dogs like I know them as does my husband just from hearing me talk about you guys or from seeing pics from the forum.

Michele, I've been traveling and I'm just now reading this. I am so so sorry. As Sugar said, I've felt so connected to Harley through the years and her strength and perseverance astounded me. You and your husband gave her so much love and your commitment to her health and happiness has inspired me so much as my own dogs have dealt with their health issues. I know there's nothing I can say to truly bring you comfort as you grieve, but please know that you're in my thoughts. (hugs)
