Sedona has been crate-free since August. Her crate door is always open. She can't leave her space, and all dogs are safe when I'm not home. She's amazingly well-behaved, non-destructive, even leaving food scented items alone when my housekeeping fails from time to time. She does bark a bit at the world through the big living room window, but that's what normal dogs do, right? Everything's good.
Yeah, not so much. She has developed a real aversion to being locked in her crate. She now rarely runs for it when she thinks she's going outside; she prefers to jump onto the sofa and roll about, just trying to be cute and difficult at the same time. And she's good at it. When I want her to go to her "bed" she just looks at me. I have to throw a treat in for her and quickly shut the door, and she doesn't like it. Even when she feels threatened or something frightens her, she'll run to the sofa first.
Oh yeah, she's totally spoiled. She gets away with almost anything, because it's still "coming out of her shell." But if I need her in her bed quickly, it's not going to happen.
On the update side, she's super healthy, still slowly improving on the outdoors fear thing, still looking for Lola all the time, but not hot for her. Lola ignores her totally. Even when Sedona is crated and the other two are allowed into the living room, Lola refuses to even look at her. Sedona just sits and stares, but not the stink-eye kind of staring, she's just watching. We've had harmony in the house for exactly one year, since the last close call. Rocky still freaks out when I take Sedona outside, but we're working on that. He uses an unstuffed toy Fuzzy as his security blanket. As soon as he sees that Sedona is going out, he runs and retrieves it. It muffles his barking, and he doesn't drop it until he sees I've returned.
That's it. Everyone is happy, safe, healthy if just a little less exercised than they should be. That part is hard on me, what with three short bus dogs. I can't seem to give each one the time they need, but I think that no matter how much one-on-one time they get, it won't be enough.
