Just under seven years ago he came into a shelter as one of 28 dogs living in squalid conditions. A rescue had evolved into a hoarding situation and his rescue paperwork showed that he had lived all nine or ten years of his life in a little cage. Spooked by leaving the only life he had known and terrified of strangers he was labeled as being aggressive. This older, 'aggressive' Pit Bull with teeth all worn down from chewing on a metal cage and a bad heart murmur was not going to be a prime candidate for adoption. Because he had bonded so strongly with me, we took a leap of faith to bring him home to live with our dog that didn’t peaceably coexist with any of the dogs in any of his four foster homes. Sunshine quickly won over our other dog and gave us the ability to start fostering. The first was a Brittany named Buck who could not handle living in a NJ shelter. We were going through Bucks paperwork during the drive home from the shelter when we found out that he was dog aggressive - not a problem with a Sunshine in the house. Next came four dogs that were last minute pulls from a euthanasia list and one who certainly would have gone on the dreaded list except for the fact that the shelter staff never noticed that he was sick. Quite a career for this unadoptable older Pit Bull who was a mentor and calming influence for other dogs. During the six and a half years he was with us he paid us back many times over for taking a chance on him.
