As if I need to add to my to-do list, but I think I'm going to work on my own puppy socialization checklist. I still have Cajun's from when he was a puppy and we did it all times 10. The only things I would change on this one would be changing 'Oriental' to 'Asian' (to be politically correct) and add some other things such as feeding the puppy in various places (different rooms in the home, in the car, in a public area) take out 'Petsmart/Petco' changing to 'Pet stores. I tend to get longwinded but I think it would be essential to go into more detail about how to properly socialize and the importance of it even before vaccine protocol is finished. Just making sure that it's done correctly and safely.

The checklist aspect is great. I just had a problem with some of the 'intro' stuff. For instance, there is new material dubunking the 'don't coddle them, you will reinforce fear' thing, and actually it's scientifically valid and acceptable to support/praise your dog when they are feeling fearful. A little encouragement for a fearful pup can go a long way. Also, I would talk about introducing pups to new stimuli at a moderate level they can tolerate and if stress occurs, that means the intensity is just too high - reintroduce at a lower intensity level and work up to more. Also if the pup is mildly stressed I would do some classical conditioning work in the presence of the stressful thing and then remove the pup. I wouldn't jump right to removing for stress. I would want to see some behavior that indicated the dog was back to exploratory/inquisitive mode. Humans can very easily shape fearful/aggressive behaviors in dogs by immediately removing a thing the dog is having a problem with. A little stress over kids right now can turn into full-blown fear aggression down the line. Also, it is important to end on a positive note and not keep pushing the pup to the point where he is likely to get stressed. Short socialization trips and lots of them with ample time to recuperate between sessions is the way to go
