This site may already be posted here but if not I wanted to put it out there. I've known about it for some time but ignored it simply because I feel any opinion of mine would be fuel for the fire. Just wanted everyone else's thoughts: www.dogsbite.org/Just for the record, I was seriously bitten by a Catahoula Leopard Dog when I was five years old at Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, Tx. My father scooped me up and ran with me to the first aid tent and kept his T-shirt for years, soaked and stained with blood. I remember some of this event, specifically some of the dogs there and right up before the bite and more so afterward. I certainly don't blame the dog at all, he should never have been there (dog was chained, hog hunter owner, catahoula breeder, intact male with a bitch in heat within feet) I was petting a collie who had been in several Lassie movies and stepped back into the Cats area and he redirected a hard bite into my thigh. Quick bite, no regrip, no thrash, no nothing other than pure frustration. Since then, my stupid self has been bitten by a stray mix which required an ER visit and simple butterfly strips and one more bite from a neighbor's dalmatian which was supperficial but the dog was a total bitch.

FYI, Marthina:
The lion tamer complex A behavioral trait not addressed in the Tufts study has been dubbed the "Lion Tamer Complex" (LTC). Many pit bull owners believe they are superior dog owners and through this superiority can control the "game bred" pit bull by teaching discipline and love. While not all pit bulls are inherently vicious, their genetic history cannot be "loved" out of them either. LTC is currently fracturing animal groups, particularly concerning the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dogfighting facility. On one side of the argument is PETA, who believes dogs trained for fighting are unsafe, unserviceable and should be destroyed. On the other side, Best Friends Animal Society believes the dogs can be rehabilitated through obedience training and love.10

Thanks for sharing the story, Jess. And look at ya now!!
The only dog I have ever been bitten by has been a Chow and i've been bitten by two of them. When I lived in MI the neighbors had a chained Chow and he was okay while you were petting him, but as soon as you started to back away, he attacked. The other Chow was a family friend's and who the heck knows what that dog's problem was. Thankfully neither bite was serious.
That last comment about LTC is interesting. I am perplexed by PETA's stance as well as Best Friend's. I just am always thinking...those dogs are going to live the rest of their stressed-out lives there, taking up space for good dogs. :whu: I just don't know about complete rehabilitation, but that's just my opinion.

We found that someone brought our rescue's name up in a comment on that site. We are NOT pleased to say the least, but what can you do. The comment was essentially accusing us of being a rescue that labels "fighting dogs" as "bait dogs" instead to get them adopted.
We can only scratch our head and fume a little! lol!

Lol! I probably live right around the corner from where they used to live. The Naval Weapons Station is about a mile from my house They probably also know it by Ghetto Creek or Duck Ditch! It's not a bad town though at all in my opinion. Been living here since 1994.

"Fighting breeds pose a unique danger to the public for two primary reasons. The first is that they fail to communicate intention. There is rarely a growl, bark or direct stare before an attack. The second is that they are bred for delivering a "sustained attack." In these instances the victim is bitten multiple times, over an extended period of time, resulting in catastrophic injury.4
Fighting breeds are also inherently animal aggressive. Because of this trait, these breeds regularly attack our pets and livestock. Pit bulls are the most notorious for this crime, a crime that often goes unpunished. Advocates of these breeds say that animal-aggression does not lead to human-aggression. Yet, it nearly always does: a pit bull attacks a person's dog and the dog's owner gets injured trying to stop the attack. "
Lol if anything I would want to break up a fight of a pitbull than any other dog becuz they would be less likely to snap back at me. that is not true for all but most. they mention that they are fighting breeds as well, how do they think their handlers survived all those years in the ring with them? getting bitten, ya right.
"As the Tufts study illustrates, pit bull owners frequently pass their dogs off as other breeds to diminish a perceived stigma. Animal organizations do as well. In 1935, the American Kennel Club (AKC) agreed to register pit bull dogs, but only under the name Staffordshire terrier. This was done to distance the breed from its dogfighting past. To muddy matters further, in 1972 the breed was renamed the American Staffordshire terrier.2"
now i may be wrong but i have read that the American Staffordshire terrier and the APBT are two completely different breeds. while the APBT was still used for fighting the staffy was used as a show dog. If i am correct in assuming that then i would also have to say that the staffy looks different from the APBT. i have heard more often than not that people recognize that the staffy is descended from the APBT. but whatever there are more sites advocating for pitbulls than not. DogTown did a special on saving the vick dogs, have these people done anything on banning them? NO. so while we are right to challenge these people to the fullest, I do not think it will amount to anything.
"their genetic history cannot be "loved" out of them either. "
whose suggesting it can be? as with any large dog of ANY breed you need to be careful.
"but the inherent fighting trait of a pit bull is to "lock and shake.""
no it is the instinct in any dog with a prey drive (which is most) because when they catch something they shake it to kill it. labradors may have a "softer jaw" but that is only after they have been TRAINED to carry birds without injuring them. but even while traning the dog will still "lock and shake" because it doesn't know better yet.
THIS SITE IS SO DUMB (dogbites.org more like idiots.org, i could make a fly seem harmful if i listed all the people mosquitoes have killed by spreading malaria. but where's the ban on them?)

ya i know, just a vent session i guess, the site pissed me off they took the good things and turned them negative, and where did they get all those "bite victims" to pose for such perfect shots? (i mean i would suck if those people were actual bite victims, but the point im trying to make is that it all seemed a little to perfect)
