The REAL Pit Bull - American Pit Bull Terrier - is neither the devil dog of media infamy, nor a pussycat that is 'the same as any dog'. The truth lies in the middle.
The Pit Bull is as human-friendly a breed as has ever existed, first and foremost. Do not be fooled by the claims of unscrupulous breeders passing off "protective", "guard" and "attack" Pit Bulls. These are not true Pit Bulls.
The Pit Bull may show some inter-dog aggression. Just as all breeds tend to show behavioral traits reminiscent of the work they once were created to perform, Pit Bulls too show signs of their past - the breed was created to bait live animals as well as fight members of their own species. This history shows its shadows in the present day in the form of interdog aggression, as well as heightened predatory drive in general. This isn't "good" or "bad" - it just "is".
The REAL Pit Bull is a medium size dog. It is not "tiny", it is not "large". Please beware - many breeders are producing dogs that are huge (100 pounds), heavy, lumbering creatures, and are charging large sums of money to the innocent public for dogs that cannot be considered "real" Pit Bulls by any stretch of the imagination. The REAL Pit Bull should be around 50 lbs, give or take, depending on the standard you are reading. They are lean, athletic, with rippling muscles meant to aid not interfere in any work the dog performs.
The REAL Pit Bull may be registered as "American Pit Bull Terrier" with the UKC, ADBA, or the AADR.
