WARWICK — Police are investigating the shooting death of a pit bull missing for 10 days before it was found dumped on the side of the road near Greenwood Lake with three bullet wounds and a belly full of fresh dog food.
Boo, a 5-year-old pit bull, disappeared from his Warwick home Dec. 18 along with his son, a 7-month-old puppy named Brutus.
"My family is truly torn apart," said owner Kerry Brannigan. "He was a son to me. My daughter keeps saying, 'Why would someone do this to our family?'"
Boo was fed shortly before he was shot, according to Warwick Animal Control Officer Suzyn Barron, who has knowledge of the dog's necropsy.
"If this was a dog who was being aggressive and shot by someone defending themselves, they would have called the police," she said.
"The way the dog was dumped indicates it was a malicious act."
Brutus still is missing. Warwick police Lt. Tom Maslanka said there's no evidence the dogs were stolen and it's possible the shooting was lawful.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has offered a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call Warwick police at 986-3423 or leave an anonymous tip with the Warwick Valley Humane Society at 987-7336.
