:-[ I found this dog woundering our trailer park a year ago and kept him. He looked to be young about 9 mo or so. Well it was right after my olest pit died from heart worms like weekand he had the same marking. I just told my husband that I didn't want to get any more dogs. We rescue alot from the street and had just lost 3 puppies. all from parvo but then Jake died and I just couldn't handle all the pain. It was so hard. Jake was going on two yrs and had all his shots. I don't know I cryed for two days. Well when I saw Brock afew days after jakes death I couldn't just leave him out there. He got along great wih the others and reall didn't see a problum. Okay now hes getting bad. I had to chain him out side. With a big chain. I tryed to keep him in the house but we have three cats. all the other dogs are okay with them. well except for Vixen my gold pit mix. she dosen't know what to do with her self when I put her inside. Which cat to go for first. Back to Brock. He jummps fences and attacked other strays that have come in front of the trailer. okay on leash as long as there are not any other dogs or cats. He is gettting more aggressive towerd the other dogs I have. I can't really let him off the chain and I tryed to gethim to lay down around the cats but he refuses to. I have even tried treats when the cats go to thewindow where he is tied. but he won't take them. What do I do. Jake actually killed a cat we had before and we drove up to kind it in his mouth. it was around halloween and we got home they where in the yard and all you see in my head lights was red and jake with the cat hanging out of his mouth in pecies. my kids were in the car with me just started screaming. Jake was my oldest daughters pet. after that she wouldn't get close to him for about 3months. brock is mine and my husband says if something is not done about his behavior we may have to send him to the pound. I was thinking about more socializing but with a muzzle. and then go from there. I really don't think he is dangerouse just board I have a busy schedual and thought about a running machine but they are illigal use if you own a pit here in texas. Thought of as fighting equipment. What if i tied him to my side all day. Eh just jumps on me all the time He is not getting any lighter. I know he is not dangerous, it just that I'm scared he will try to be aggresive with the kids. He is very aggrassive with my other dogs especialy if they try to get into his dog house or around him. He is not house trained. and not nutered. I know I should but I don't have the funds right now. And I don't have a female old enough to breed so I didn't think it would matter. Someone told me dog males have to "X" twice a year or they get agressive unless they are fixed. Is that true. n-e-way this is why sighned up for this forum I know this breed is specail and I love them. but unless you have trained one or owned one you really don't know how to help. I'd rather ask someone who has well balanced pits. Can any one help me. how can I get him to stop jummping fences, and attacking other dogs and even my cats? help!!!! :-[

There are SOOOO many things to address in this email. I'm just pulling out the most basic things, first.....and we'll work from there. Why isn't he housetrained? Have you done any obedience training with him? Chaining him outdoors is only going to make matters worse. His behavior will only deteriorate. If you need help locating a low-cost/free spay-neuter clinic, we can help you. It really isn't expensive at all to neuter. Honestly, though, if you don't have time to exercise him, house train him, or do any sort of training/socialization with him, I don't see much hope for this situation at all. There are some great people on this forum who can surely offer lots of suggestions and help, but before anyone jumps in, I'd like to know you are serious and this isn't just a 'hit and run' post asking for advice that people spend time on offering, only to have the poster never return. No offense We've had quite a few people who have done that.

No mamm I an not a hit and run poster. I love brock but I do have some issues with depression I rarlly leave my house. We have been unemployed fro abut ayear but before that I did right by my doggs. spoiled them and then jake died and things went down hill from there. I really do not want to get rid of him I have seen the sheltes around here and if youhave a pit they tend to put them down first. The aspc will not take him unless I pay 50.00 dollers or say that he is astray. I love brock I really want to help him be a balenced and happy dog. He is not house trained because I can not keep him in the house for to long and if I do he tryes every thing to get oat my cats. We tryed seperating them but he has busted down doors and fliped couches and jumped baby gate to get to them. I thought you could suggest some things.

The dog needs
1) To be neutered 2) To be exercised regularly (AT LEAST an hour a day of good, brisk walking/jogging) 3) To undergo some basic training (there are some really good books, and even online training resources - I can point you in the right direction, plus fill in any gaps that need filling in
You must figure out a way to get him into the house safely - have you tried crating him? He is 'busting down' doors? What about leashing/tethering?
Pit Bulls are very often predatory towards cats. If you cannot keep dogs and cats separated as necessary, that can be a real problem with a cat-chasing/killing dog.

Muzzles are for safety purposes only, they won't help with training, and in general I do not recommend them. What they also do, is help the dog learn he cannot bite when the muzzle is on, but when you take the muzzle off he learns all bets are off. If you could answer my specific questions, that'd be a big help. I want to help, but without all the proper information, I won't be able to do much. If you could find low cost neutering in your area, will that be doable for you? What about exercising him more? What sort of opportunities for exercise and playtime does he have now? Has be been crated since you've had him? A crate, introduced properly, will be a big help in managing him. You mentioned you have trouble handling him, or inferred it, so that tells me right off the bat that he hasn't received a significant amount of obedience training. If he cannot respond to cues like sit, stay, come, down, leave it, etc, he will be difficult to control. Basic training is the cornerstone to any good behavior modification or management program. Training helps you learn how to control your dog and communicate with him. Once we've established what you can and cannot do or are willing to try, we can get into the 'how to's'.

I live in San Antonio and had my Nina spayed for free through snap (spay-neuter assistance program) www.snapus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=SanAntonio_Mobile_Clinic. Phone number is 210-673-7722. You may qualify for free services if you receive food stamps, Medicaid, HUD Section 8 housing, Social Security Disability, SSI, etc. Please see the link for more information. You can find the snap mobile unit schedule on the site and they are around town almost daily. I did not qualify for the free service actually, but they do offer a free surgery approximately twice a month. The only catch is they take 20-22 dogs/cats and you have to arrive extremely early to get in. The first time I showed up at 5:45 am and I didn't make the list, but I made sure to be there at 3:00 am the second time and was 7th on this list. If you don't have the funds, it is worth it. The mobile unit arrives at 7 am to begin taking in the animals. I believe the Animal Defense League (on Nacogdoches) also offers reduced rates to those who have low income.

Please do answer Mary's questions as best you can. It's really hard to guide people in the right direction without having as much detail as possible... especially when we're not able to see these behaviors first hand. Now as for low cost sputers, there are a few sites that have information listed for several states... Spay USA is one that I generally point people too, as well as PBRC. They can offer you assistance to have him neutered. From Spay USA - www.spaytexas.org/ maybe you can find something close to you on this site.

hello everyone thanks fro all the advice. I have checked the snapmoblie unit. I have just missthe one in my area. I understand You all may be disapointed with me for not training him properly. He dose respond to some commands. Not at first but he is working on that. I guess I have babyed him and saw jake in him and not a different dog. Jake was a great dog and I could walk w him off the leash and he never strayed. Ofcourse I would leash him and have it on him but I would not hold it. That was jake This is brock. must remember they are two different dogs. He dose not have a kennel I do not have the funds for them. I have him on a heavy chain. I did have him on a tether or runner but he broke that. ANd all the other chains. He is very determand and I love that about him. I know are probly thinking if I could not aford him why did I keep him. Well I did call the humain socity and the local pet control but all were full and I have tryed to rehome him using criegs list but I kept getting flaged. so I have decided to work with him. okay now I want to nuter him and walk him on nice days fro about 20min. I know its not alot of time but where I live it is the only road I can walk him on we live off a busy road and woods. my husband will walk him in the woods some times but he has gotten away and jumped on an old man and scared the tar out of him. He has gotte in to another fight with the same dog and now the pound has takent he other dog. He was a stray i asked if I sould be worryed but they said it was probly a territory thing. Neways I have to start an exersise plan and keep on the assertive control pack leader thing and stick with it. not baby him.
