"Beef" him up? How old is he? While Pit Bulls are muscular, they aren't supposed to be heavy or over-built. Some are actually pretty lean. Do you have a pic? I don't advocate anything other than proper food and exercise to keep your dog in shape. No special pills, exercise techniques or supplements.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous breeders out there promoting huge, overdone, Pit Bulldogs that lack athleticism and are NOT correct at all for the breed. I think some people new to Pit Bulls see these overdone dogs and compare their own, correct dogs thinking their dogs are some how not up to par.

why add muscles? ...we love pittbulls the way they are; mind body and spirit.......changing a dog to what his owner desires it to look like is egomanic.... the breeders are out of control trying to make the bigest or baddest dog....... my own yogi is built like a horse and is probably close to 200 pounds or more..... and big as he is , hes very sweet and loving but intimating to strangers as his size intenisfies instant fear to those who dont understand the pitbull... I would rather he was smaller which would make him look less intimating but I accept him as he is...people fear pitbulls because they are the most powerful dogs whose reputaton is being destroyed by the media.... do we who are responsible dog owners want our pets to become anymore powerful......... no way !

as a pitty matures after the age of 3..... the body will fill out according to what his genes are like........My yogi was two months old when I got him , I knew than that he would grow up to be as big as a house because his paws were huge and his legs long , his body kind of muscle for a little pup and his length was pretty long.......

From the photo, he looks to have an average amount of muscle. A healthy diet and proper exercise will keep him where he should be. The healthiest look is the best look in my opinion.

LOL mary if you saw my yogi..... you would be at the size..........on one side of his face he has the features of an American bulldog and on the other side;the look of a great dane by the shape of his snout and the way a dane actually looks like in the face.......... its weird but its like a split ..he 's so huge that strangers passing by exclaim how big he is........Yogi has to go for his shots in april , ill ask the techs there to weigh him........mixed pits come in so many sizes.....

I agree, "the healthiest look is the best look"..........I prefer my yogi the best of health rather than what his size is ........and GOD!!! he is the number one lap dog in my house,at least half his body is laying on the couch , he so sweetly plops his head on my shoulders while watching tv.... I hate to disappoint him and tell him to get off so I dont........ he really feels hurt and sulks in the corner ...lol gotta bear all that weight for a smile of joy on my pittys face.

Mcgregor~ Would you mind posting in one font/color just for the sake of us recognizing your posts? No biggee, but I find myself looking back to see who posts and it's often you several times in a row.
I'd be really interested in your dogs weight. 200 pounds is exceptional. Even if you have a dane x, 200 pounds is HUGE.
You know you dont have to wait for a scheduled visit to weigh him, you can do that at any time.
The day I see a 200 pound pit bull is the day I might throw up my hands and give up on fighting for the cause.

'I did not say he was 200 lbs .....Ouote ... I ... ''he is probably close to 200 lbs or more'' he may be 175 lbs approximately... Iam a very busy man and I do have to schedule an appointment to keep;I live in the boonies and going to town is a one and a half hour ride one way....why waste gas when I have more prospects to do when in town ......blue is my color for all the forums that Iam a member of , it is a change of pace from the often blatant black,, change is good for the soul.......It is my opinion to type as I feel unless it against rules .....I make several posts actually because I forget to add submissions sometimes... My Yogi may not even be a pitbull, he looks more like an American Bulldog blame that on the breeders .....I would never consider giving up for the cause ,no matter what the reason, I do understand your point though.......[/color]

Photo of my Yogi.... This is the side of his face that adheres to Yogi looking like a Great Dane but you can not notice the resemblence unless you view his face in a flat outline of his profile. I have always suspected him to be American Bulldog; his Great Dane features suddenly came to light just a week ago as I was admiring his sweet demeanor.... he is mixed or otherwise???
This is the latest painting of Yogi that I created and completed last month

He is sooooo handsome. I really think he looks like a Johnson type American Bulldog. I don't really see any Dane there. But that's just me Here is an example of a Johnson AB

I don't think anyone said you are treating your dog badly. Why not tell us what your dog's current health and exercise regimen is, and we can tell you where you might need to tweak it a little?
For instance, what sort of food/supplements does your dog get, what sort of exercise each day, etc.
Also, how old is your dog, and can you post a bigger pic so we can see his current condition?

You are correct Mary, just as I speculated as when yogi was a two month old pup that he could be a Johnson type American Bulldog.... now that he is four years old and matured, he has that stocky bonned look but he is tall and the body is long in length.... as you know muscle weights a lot more than fat , its the muscle mass that attributes to his weight..... the Great Dane features can not be seen in the photo or painting, only by looking at the outline of yogi's profile ; the feature can be noicable ...
