Before Dustin and I moved to our new home, we lived just outside the city limits but the city passed BSL....basically out of the blue. In the beginning before we knew the details, we seriously thought that we were in the vicinity and of course panic struck in.
However we immediately decided beforehand that we would just have to move up our plans of buying a house and moving out of the area.
Thankfully we didn't fall into the covered area, we were able to go back to our original 'buy a house' plan, and we now live in the city limits of an area with a Dangerous Dog Ordinance that is *not* breed specific.
Which recently after talking to a friend who works for the police down there, she said the law hasn't done a thing really. It was the type of law that requires PB's to be registered, huge ins, muzzles, pay more stuff, huge holding area, etc etc etc but she says that nothing has changed and I don't even know that they are enforcing any of it.

Claim Lucy was a Pharaoh Hound!, and if that didn't work I'd probably ship her off to my mom until I could find a new place to live where she was allowed and work my butt off to get the law changed.

Lucky for me, Dixie can pass as a lab. =)
If the BSL pinpointed other bully breeds as well, then we'd be in trouble because of my Ambull, Mav. We would move.

I could probably pass my Athena off as a boxer. Sense I'm going to college I couldn't move...Hopefully with her being outside the city limits they wouldn't be able to enforce it. If they did, well I can always transfer to a different school!

The problem with BSL is that the burdon of proof is on the owner to prove the dog is NOT an APBT, or 'pit bull type' dog.
As long as my dog was safe for the time being, I would stay and fight. NJ has a state-wide non-BSL law that trumps municipal law, but ya never know...look what's happening in Florida right now. I think it is important for people to stay and do their best to fight. Within reason, of course, and as long as the dogs can be safe while the battle is raging.

you are right. we all need to do what we can to show the APBT breed in a positive light - that is the only way that we can change the minds of those that would take our pets away.

It's also a disservice to the breed if we resolve to calling our dogs what they aren't. Why must the responsible owners "rename" their dog's breed?

I know. The breed has been bathed in such an "unflattering" light for so many years that it will be a test to all of us who love and respect these animals to put things back as they should be. I am trying to change minds about these wonderful guys here locally - but right now I am having to do it one person at a time. I would love to be able to create a group here in Shreveport that can offer education on these dogs - any ideas on how to get something like that going? I guess - at this point - it seems like the only way to avoid BSL is to head it off at the pass...

Get in touch with the legislators and talk to them about good dog legislation; work on educating owners and others that would impact our dogs. Andrea, I think a good way to start is to try and form an email list of people who reside in your area; this will keep everyone in easy contact and will help in organizing rallies, education efforts, etc.

Mary believe me, I'm fighting here in florida. I got with my breeder who got with all the clubs locally to fight and spam the hell out of the state representatives. I've individually wrote over a 1/2 dozen letters. I know sheriffs who have pits, in my county. Thankfully I live in Redneckville. Where pits are prevalent and the owners love their babies.

My brother lives in florida, I initially had thoughts of moving there but since fla is hot on BSL.. I changed my mind, my yogi comes first.....He is currently registered which makes it just right in case BSL visits and we have a grandfather law in California... I feel without registering the pitbull there may be less of a chance to save it.......I moved here in the boonies but I hate it, the snows are horrilbe and it is ski country but as people are scared to rent to those with pitbulls , I found a rental that did and that counts as saving my dog, lucky me indeed but get this! the landlord hates animals , dogs in particular... the reason he rented to me is because no one wants to move up here, the place has been vacant for three years.... there are many people here and most of them have pitbulls ; rednecks too that love their dogs

Do any of the BSL laws in various places include grandfather clauses for dogs that were properly registered prior to the new laws? Just curious.

Yes, a lot/most of them do in areas with full blown bans. They won't kick your dog out, but you can't bring in any new ones. And you must comply with requirements stated in the law (muzzle, insurance, etc.) which of course means lots of people just dump their dogs in shelters after BSL is put on the books. Denver was an exception because the law was on the books and not enforced. So people that had brought dogs in, ignoring the law, ended up paying for it after the city started enforcing the law.

I've already lived somewhere were there was BSL (Vancouver, B.C. but it has since been dropped! Yay!) and it sucked. It wasn't an out right ban, just a muzzle/confinment law and it wasn't enforced at all in the area of town I lived, but it was if you went to other parts of the city. I eventually moved because it was so annoying. You'd have people yelling at you about your vicious dogs, blah, blah, blah.

If BSL was passed in my town, I would like to think that I would fight it fiercely and publicly. However, I suspect that I might chicken out and declare my pit mix a boxer mix.

This is a sad question for me because it's already happened to me once. I've given a lot of thought to this again recently because BSL has knocked at my door a couple of times in the last year. As much as it kills me to think about it... I've already lost one love to BSL and if it happened again and I lost Karma, she would be my last Pit Bull. I would still fight like hell to keep other dogs from being pulled out of loving arms, but honestly... I don't think I could go through it a third time myself. I used to say that I'd pack up and move, but BSL is something that can follow you and it's impossible to stay ahead of it by moving every time it rears its ugly head.
