Snipe asked in the Clicker Training thread:
Is there a specific spot you plan on teaching her to go to, over and over? Because I'd stick with one place, that you could cue her to go to and wait until you said otherwise.
I'd probably teach it something like this....
I think what would be best would be a rug you could leave for her, so she could easily target that.
Get the rug, place it in an area that is small enough that when you put it down, she'd likely have to step on it by only moving a little bit. Click and treat. When you see she is making some association between stepping on the rug and the c/t, move the rug to a space where she'd actually have to move a few paces in order to step on it. Repeat as above.
Place the rug where you want her to move to when someone is coming through the door and practice c/t'ing anytime she puts her feet on it.
After each training session, pick the rug up.
Once you can place the rug down in the specific spot and she automatically walks over to it to put her paws on it, begin to use your cue ("place", or whatever you choose), as she moves over to it. C/t. Repeat repeat repeat.
Then, once you've got that down pat, put the rug down. If she immediately walks over to it without you saying anything, don't c/t. You want her to start to get the idea that she has to wait for a cue. Call her to you off the rug, then cue "Place!" If you've been progressing properly to this point, she probably knows what this word means and will rush to the rug. Now you c/t and repeat.
You can just leave the rug down now.
The last step would be to begin asking her to sit or down after you cue "Place". So, you'd say "Place", she'd go to the rug, you'd cue a sit or down, THEN c/t.
Remember, after she's good at this without distractions, you will have to start working her WITH distractions (i.e. someone ringing the doorbell, knocking on the door, and eventually company coming in).
Alright, here's a question about training a dog to go to a mark. Basically how should I do it? I want to first get the pointer stick down-pat so she knows exactly where I want her to go. Do you think I should use a physical object (a mat, or flat disc) for her to sit on, or maybe some tape on the ground. I think that a physical object would work better.
Basically where I want to go with this is teach her to go to her mark when people come to the door, so she is not crowding the doorway. Since I don't have the book yet I was hoping I could get some answers sooner here.
