Funny story So my dogs are crate trained and are crated while I am gone. I've posted in another post before, but Red's crate is no longer collapseable due to us tightening the hooks since he figured out how to knock the ends down and be a free dog. Well I am always the last to leave the house during the week, and as soon as I sit down to put my shoes on...Red will go into his crate and just sit there and wait for me to close it up and leave. He literally just started doing this on his own (before I would tell him to get in his crate when I was ready to leave) and he's been doing it so consistently now, that I've caught myself almost forgetting to latch it b/c the door is close to being shut or looks shut and he's just sitting there watching me. Well today...I forgot lol. Dustin got home and called me whenever he was surprisingly greeted by Red lol. He used to be really bad about destroying things when he was left alone, but thankfully he is A LOT better about that...so nothing was destroyed when Dustin got home. Instead of me training Red to go in his crate before I leave, I think he is trying to train me to forget to latch him up lol

dont feel bad, a few years ago i had a 2 year old female rott foster, i put her in her wire crate upstairs in the living room, rufus was down stairs in his crate, and sonny and jesse were loose.. we went to a xmas party for the rottie rescue i was fostering for.. 4 hours later we came home and was greeted by the female rott, my male rottx, and my very DA gsd female... rufus was locked in his crate thankfully... after the initial shock, i go upstairs and the fosters wire crate is INTACT.. nothing is bent, nothing broken, door still locked shut... how did she get out you wonder? she pushed the crate pan out the front of the crate and squeezed all 85 lbs of her out the back by pushing in the back part of the wire crate, squeezed out, and the crate snapped back in place..... needless to say i zip tied every inch of all sides, tops, bottoms on that crate so she couldnt squeeze out again....
one other time i had a different wire crate and rufus figured out how to use his paws to slide the locks open.. i came home to him loose a few times until i put an actual padlock and LOCKED it on the door... then i got a crate with different door locks that he couldnt open...

Ha! Loved that story ME!
A friend of mine recently boarded a Schipperke (rescued, believe or not) which was a really nice dog but had figured out how to fiddle with the crate latches til they slid open.
Fortunately I have never had an issue with a dog trying to escape a crate but have heard some horror stories.

See, these are all perfect examples of why I recommend zip ties and snaps along the outer edges of wire crates! These dogs would give Houdini a run for his money! Seriously! When I had kennel runs in my old yard, that was another thing I had to worry about - snap and padlocks were used, because Luca was the king of opening up gates.

While dogsitting, one of the boarders, a Schipperke there has figured out if he fiddles with the latches (top and bottom) he can work them loose and open the crate door. Fun to watch and even more so after I clipped the door shut and he finally resolved himself to realize that his efforts no longer pan out.

When I had a cat and ferrets, my cat would open the door to the ferret cage to let them out to play. I was not amused. Okay, maybe a little bit.

A suggestion to everyone who crate trains. See if your town offers pet stickers for your windows in case of a fire. We have a small note on the sticker that states CRATED dog. A few years ago a person in our neighborhood lost their dog b/c firefigthers just called for the dog and didn't get to the crate and get him out fast enough.
We use carabiners in place of locks so they work but are easier to get off for a human.

Excellent point, Liz! Do you know of a site online which sells these? I got some from Jeffers Pet supply. In the search box type in Emergency Stickers to find them. They're not exactly what she said as far as crated, but you can write it in.
