Oh - that is just wrong!! I mean - come on - they came up with microchips so that dogs did not have to have the REG# tatooed on the inside of their back legs...

Wow, that's terrible. I have heard that alot of dog owners in the South tattoo their dogs. Anyone in the South know if there is any truth to that? I'm not sure why they say the South, as opposed to anywhere else, but...

The only time I have heard of a dog getting tattooed down here is prior to microchipping becoming a popular and affordable "identification" device.

When Lola was spayed, she was microchipped as well. They did tattoo a small line on her belly though. They said it was for the purpose of identifying her as spayed. I had never heard of that, but that's nowhere near what these people did to their cat.

IMO, tattooing for id purposes - something simple like a line, for instance - is a FAR cry from sedating your animal and forcing it to endure getting poked with a needle over and over for sake of rediculous human vanity.

Better than cutting off half of an animals ears which is a widespread practice all over the place. I know ferrets are tattooed to determine where they were bred. It is just a small tattoo on the ear usually. I have never heard of a dog being tattooed.
But this cat thing, is pretty disgusting of a human being to do to an animal IMO.

If we can crop or dock, things that have no value except from the perspective of the human, why can't we tattoo our pets for the sake of looks? Or pierce their ears? Or any number of other things? Where does it end? I really believe unnecessary cosmetic proceedures should be banned when they involve surgery, anesthesia, or poking needles into an animal.

Too bad we can't put the owner under anesthesia and give her some tattoo that we think would look cool on her...

i don't know how strong microchips are, but i might do a small tattoo (tiny circle) that will last forever and could help me identify her.

There are tattoo clinics for dogs, and a registration procedure (just like for chips). Dogs are tat'd with their reg number, owner's SS #, etc. In fact, now there might be a specific, unique number given when you get the dog tattoo'd (just like there are ID numbers for microchips); I'm out of the dog tattoo loop, so I'm not sure, but I do believe you can register the tattoo with AKC's Companion Animal Recovery system. I'm not sure that a simple mark would do much good, because anyone could claim that the dog was theirs based on some random mark.

That picture is just awful, who would want to do that? A decorative harness would have the same effect. And tattoos hurt while they are healing and can become infected, more subjecting an animal to unnecessary pain.
I don't know about the south being more prevelant in tattooing dogs. I live as south as you can get on the gulf coast and have never seen an indication that it happens here anymore than anywhere else.
We do have a greyhound racetrack in my area (which makes me sick) and it's still common practice to tattoo each ear or inner thigh with the dog's race id #. Inner thigh became more popular b/c guess what...ears can be cut off and have been.
I have also heard of tattooing for id on the inside of the lip but honestly, who checks there??
I do like the idea of making a mark to indicate a dog has been spayed, sometimes it's even difficult to tell. But something as minor as the line that someone stated makes sense.

Another thing, they put this cat under for 3 hours! Imagine if he died b/c of the anesthesia. I'm sure some of you have heard about a trend of piercing dogs ears for "fashion". Ugh, what next?

This is just sick! I'm so sick of all of the "rights" preaching going on lately. People think it is their "right" to do anything they want with anything they own regardless of who or what it affects.

I'm just seeing this.. I had 3 Boxer foster pups who all got a small line tattooed on their belly after being altered. I was completely fine with this, as they were already sedated and it helps tell that the dog has indeed been altered. But this is just...weird. yuck!

A tattoo to denote a dog as being altered is NOT the same thing.

Ok Ok before the panties are waddded up. I really think this is a hoax. The tattoo is tooooo perfect to have JUST been done. I am going to have to say this is a hoax. Feline skin is very very thin, That cat would be perferated and bleeding. Any of guys have tattoos? There is always a rag where they dap the ink to clear the area. That seems to be missing. So yeah, Drugged cat from maybe a spay or some other procedure and a rub on tattoo or airbrush makes for great headlines. Here is a tattoo I have found on a dog that is fresh- www.bmezine.com/pierce/11-surface/A60818/high/bmepb329698.jpg it has the traditional scab look and swelling. I am not saying that I agree with this but Something just doesnt feel right the the Sphynx.
