Oh, I've never let Omelet off the leash outside of my yard. He's such a fraidy cat that I've never even gotten him ON a leash, lol. The dogs that I've run with off leash have been the series of black Labs that I've had throughout most of my life.
There are a series of battlefield parks around us with many remote trails. That is where we run. Twice, in times past, we have rounded a curve and run face first into a park ranger who did the whole finger shaking in the face thing. I'm not trying to excuse it. I just want to be clear that these were remote areas and it was not Omelet. It is illegal in a national park, I broke the rules and I got caught.
As far as our subdivision goes, our dogs are never out of the yard unleashed. I don't like it when I see someone else's dog doing his business in my yard, getting in our trash or charging up to my children. I want to show the same consideration to others that I expect to receive from them.

Thanks for the clarification; my post was meant to general, though, wasn't my intention to target a specific poster. Dogs being off leash when they shouldn't be is a huge contention of mine, and most people's idea of a justified off leash dog is NOT my idea of justified.

I obey leash laws. But I go for offleash hikes with Lucy all the time. We live in the mountains, where we hike is far far away from any sort of civilization. We'd be lucky to run into one person on our hikes, and it is usually when we go swimming, because on nice days, other people usually have the same idea.
