Hi there! My mom just recently rescued my doggy from the middle of the while she was riding her horse. He ran up to her and wouldn't leave her alone, and jumped in her car saying "take me home!" I was not expecting a dog, and just recently purchased my first home, so having Andre around has been sort of stressful as we try to settle into our home and remodel every weekend. My plan was to find him a great home but he has begun to grow on me Not to mention I am frightened that he will not go to a good home, or be abandoned once again by his new owners. He is a big boy (between 85 and 90lbs ...he wouldn't hold still on the scale...). Are there pit bulls that are that large? Or is he a mix of some kind? I can't wait to get everyone's advice... I will need the training help along the way.. Thanks!!!

Hi there! That's wonderful that you have taken it upon yourself to give Andre the sort of home he deserves. It would be helpful if you posted pictures, but most likely a dog that size is not a purebred Pit Bull. We are here to help, so don't be shy about asking questions

I love his coloration - is he black with deep red undertones??? Almost looks like a "dark chocolate".

His head is totally black. Near his rear his fur has brown undertones. Never had a two-toned doggy before.
So what do you guys think? Is he a pit mix? He is pretty big.

The color is called 'agouti' if each hair is black then fades to a brown tone. Looks like a mix to me, based on general conformation. Handsome boy!

I know the agouti gene produces the sable coloration patterns in GSDs, for instance. I'd call the above color seal. I might be missing something - I am no genetics expert

I have read in several places that these colored dogs are the "hardest to adopt out." I wonder why. Maybe because the coloration just makes him look like he is dirty??

"Black" or dark colored dogs usually collect dust in rescue or elsewhere. Some feel it's b/c adopters have a difficult time in shelters connecting with them b/c of the dark expression.
I am biased and adore black dogs. Have one of my own. Also, seems that many folks connect the dark color with "evil" (white is the good guy, black represents the bad guy). Unfounded, of course, but a theory.

Welcome!!
He's a pretty boy, my dog is a different color too, I dont know what it's called either, lots of people have thrown out different colors but I dont know which one she actually is. She's very dark as well almost black but has some definate brown underneath. On the sides of her shoulders it's even lighter, almost a silver brown, she looks like she has wings.

Is that your dog in your profile picture, chloe? She looks so pretty. I'm afaid Andre spends too much time drooling and romping in the dirt to look so shiny.

Beautiful dog!! My Dixie is 'seal' colored and personally I think it's beautiful. =)
I have a white dog (Maverick) and a black one (Dixie)...the white one looks more Bully than the black but more people are scared of Dixie (the black one).
I love black dogs. =)
