Springfield police suspect pit bulls attacked, killed woman BY AMANDA REAVY GATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE Published Monday, January 28, 2008
Springfield police are investigating whether a 22-year-old woman found dead in her home Sunday was attacked by two pet pit bulls. The woman, whose name wasn't immediately released, was discovered about noon Sunday in the 100 block of South Wheeler Avenue.
The preliminary investigation indicates the pit bulls might have been involved, but authorities won't be sure until an autopsy takes place today, a police spokesman said.
Crime scene tape roped off the yard around the woman's home late Sunday.
Greg Largent, director of operations for Sangamon County Animal Control, said animal control officers did respond to a dog bite call on Wheeler, but had no other details about the call.
Media reports indicated the two dogs weighed about 100 pounds each. They were taken into custody by animal control along with a pit bull puppy.
Springfield Deputy Chief Clay Dowis told WICS Channel 20 investigators are interviewing a man who lived at the home with the victim. He also said police believe the woman's death was an accident.
Kathy Wise, who lives across the street from the woman, said she and her 9-year-old son had seen a puppy at the woman's residence, but was not aware of other dogs living there.
"She just bought her house four months ago," Wise said. "She had a boyfriend who stayed there."
Wise said the victim was petite and mainly stayed to herself so the two had never talked. Wise, the victim and an older man were the only residents on the typically quiet block.
"The other resident heard a gunshot about 2 a.m. (Sunday). I didn't hear anything," she said. "I don't know if it was involved. There was a bullet hole in one of the (victim's) windows."
Police would not comment further.
