I'm not quite sure if this is the right place for this so I apologize if it is. I would like to train Athena to do agility work and was told by a friend not to start her on it until she is 18 months old, I was just wondering if that was the right age or if I should wait longer.

yes, 18 months is the right age, this way her joints are done growing and you wont do any damage to them.. check around your area for an agility training class. then go watch to see if its ok before you sign up, as you dont want to sign up if the trainer abuses the dogs in class or if you dont like the training used... once you find one you like, sign up and have a blast.

The rule is no full height jumping till the growth plates close, usually about 18 months. You can certainly do some low jumps though. But agility is WAY more than just the obstacles, and you can start "foundation" work at any age. Where are you located?

I'm located in Alpine, Tx and as far as I know there isn't an agility training class anywhere near here. I don't even know of any competitions for me to go watch in this area because it's kind of in the middle of nowhere.

there are lots of great trainers in Texas, but of course it's a huge state! Start out here: cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.display&page_id=100There are links to clubs and events. You'll certainly have to travel to find a trainer. El Paso, maybe? Certainly the Ft. Worth/Dallas area has lots .
