ASPCA Marks Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month With Spay/Neuter Block Party in the Heart of Harlem
Community Invited to Take Advantage of Free On-Site Medical Services
NEW YORK, April 7, 2008-
WHAT: The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is hosting a block party in the heart of Harlem as part of its month-long commemoration in April of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month and invites the Harlem community to take advantage of its full range of services, offered for free at this event.
Free spay/neuter surgery will be offered to all pets, in addition to free microchipping and free vaccinations for pit bulls and pit mixes.
WHEN: Saturday, April 18, 2009
WHERE: Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building Plaza
163 125th Street (Corner of 125th Street and Adam Clayton Blvd)
TIME: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
WHY: In 2008, the ASPCA spayed and neutered more than 23,000 cats and dogs; in 2009, that figure is projected to be over 30,000. “We have the capacity to do more,” says Dr. Steve Hansen, Senior Vice President of Animal Health Services for the ASPCA. “Bringing together all five of our Mobile Clinics at this community block party is a great way to encourage pet parents to help us decrease the number of unwanted pets and increase awareness of the importance of spay/neuter.”
DETAILS: The ASPCA will have its state-of-the-art fleet of five mobile veterinary clinics at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office building for a festive block party in the heart of New York City. Each mobile clinic is a custom-built spay-neuter hospital on wheels, with the capacity to spay and neuter approximately 125 animals each day.
Pet parents will be offered free spay/neuters for their furry friends, and owners of pit bulls and pit mixes can take advantage of free vaccinations and microchipping. The ASPCA’s Mobile Adoptions Van will also be on site. Enjoy entertainment and celebrity appearances by HOT 97 DJ Angie Martinez and KISS FM’s Lenny Green and Shaila.
“Spaying and neutering exponentially reduces the number of unwanted animals in our community,” says Dr. Hansen. It also reduces many common issues such as spraying, roaming and heat behaviors. “The health benefits are tremendous: pets live longer, remain healthier, and risks of certain cancers are eliminated.”
“The ASPCA is working hard to put an end to the tragic euthanasia and homelessness of healthy animals by addressing the animal overpopulation crisis at its source-in the heart of our local communities that most need our services,” says Aimee Hartmann, Director of the Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics for the ASPCA. “We have a pet overpopulation problem in NYC-more than 50,000 unwanted and homeless pets a year enter our shelters. The ASPCA Harlem Community Block Party is a large step forward in addressing this important issue.”
