What a pretty dog, but boy did they mess up the breed ID. SBT? I don't think soooooo! I see that ALL the time down here. They are all Staffy Bull mixes or AmStaff mixes...sure, right? Unless a dog is an AKC registered AmStaff, I don't call them AmStaffs! But a lot of folks don't get that.

I think it's true all over. It's funny, I see a LOT of red/red nose dogs get labeled AmStaffs! The one thing that would really help you determine with almost-certainty that a dog was NOT an AST, and people completely miss it.

mary,
Is it true that only APBT's have the red noses? I have heard this most of my rescue life and was wondering if that correct. I have used this fact in determining the breed of pit.
Also, are the blue noses always AST?
In St. Louis, we see a buttload of the catapits. One of our local designer breeders has been doing a great job of saturating the market. :-) We have found the catapits to unstable, hyper, and strong prey drive. (yep, catahoula traits)

mary, Is it true that only APBT's have the red noses? I have heard this most of my rescue life and was wondering if that correct. I have used this fact in determining the breed of pit. Also, are the blue noses always AST? Well, it's tricky since ASTs come directly from APBTs. So technically, any color that an APBT can be, an AST can be as well. But when the AKC recognized the APBT, the new AST standard stipulated that red/red nose dogs were not desireable. So AmStaff people have bred pretty much completely away from red/red nose color. You are making a pretty good bet that a red nose dog is NOT down from AST lines. As far as blue goes, it wasn't ever really popular until ASTs came into play. If you have a blue APBT (and there are blue UKC and ADBA reg APBTs out there, they definitely exist), you will mostly find that there are AmStaff lines in there somewhere, i.e they aren't really down from the game lines, mostly the show lines.

(yep, catahoula traits) Yanno, I would think I would see more catapits (like that name) here...since Catahoulas are quite popular here. Maybe they haven't quite caught on...though I have heard of folks outside of the city using the mix as hog dogs. I do see a lot of Catahoulas come into rescue because people are totally unprepared for how much work the breed can be...

This is my opinion.... but I do not think Catahoulas make good pets unless you are working your dogs. We took in one litter of catahoulas( pound swore they were fuzzy pits) and that will be the last litter I will ever take. :-) Interesting breed, intelligent, but unless you run these guys three or more hours a day, you will have a dog bouncing off the walls in your home.
The blue merle catapits are beautiful dogs. I have seen a red version that was just stunning.

I agree on the Catahoulas thing - they are NOT for the casual pet owner, not in the least. One reason I think Pit Bulls became so popular over some other breeds is because they are relatively so easy. They are very malleable behaviorally and you can really get away with doing a lot of bad stuff to and with them. Imagine if some of these thug and ignorant types that have latched onto APBTs had tried Cataloulas, or Filas, or Neos, or something along those lines? Thugs and ignorant dog owners would die out fast LOL Catahoulas sure are pretty and in theory you could see people latching onto them and exploiting them. Maybe there is a reason there are some idiots mixing them into APBTs, instead of dealing with the straight version

Yup, totally agree about Catahoulas not being for casual pet folk. I see too many that live here in the city w/many behavioral issues. People want them because they are cool looking (they are lol) and they are a piece of Louisiana history...not good reasons to bring a serious, need a job kinda dog home. And yes, I agree about folks wanting the mixed version LOL. Heck, it's sorta how I feel...i've met some Cata mixes that come into the shelter/rescue system that I've wanted to snatch up LOL. They had some of the look of the breed, but much a more easy going temperament.

Oh...Murphy was labeled as a Catahoula/Lab mix at the shelter LOL. His owner surrendered Murphy and his litter sister to the shelter and said that's what they were..so I guess the shelter had to use that breed listing. The woman who ran the shelter laughed at the label, yeah he's a heinz 57 I'm sure. I suppose it's possible that there is Catahoula some where in the mix, they are all over down here.
