I do not crate. I have trained my dog not to eat things like shoes. I can't do it, because I know my dog likes to move around. It took a little more effort, and many lost flip flops, but we're happier this way. In my old house, we had a fence. Sadly, in the new, we don't and Stella is taking it harder. Sure, we can hook up a super long leash WHEN WE ARE OUTSIDE TO SUPERVISE but she has no alone time in the yard =( . We have added in an extra walk in the daytime. I feel bad for my Belly, tho-no yard!!

Two dogs come in the house, but when we aren't home they have their chain spots. The rest all have chain spots.

Chance waz crate trained as a young puppy, so he's real comfy in his crate, and that's where he stays when I'm not able to take him with me..

I wanted to add, when I have multiple dogs (right now it's just the one), I utilize crates, babygates, as well as keeping dogs in individual rooms when I cannot supervise.

Lucy is a house pup, no crate. Although, she does have a chain outside for when she wants to sit on the porch and eat her sticks and dig beside the house while I'm in the kitchen.

Everyone is in the house when we're not home. Two dogs in a crate, one loose, and the cats have their own room.
We crate and rotate when we are home because Roscoe and Aiden don't get along. Both boys get along with our foxhound Bonnie, so when we're there Bonnie and one of the boys are always loose. The cats are also loose when we are home. The guinea pigs spend most of their time in the cage, but I built it 3'x6' so the two of them would get enough exercise.
Outside Roscoe and Bonnie stay in the fence. Aiden can climb it, so he is cabled. They are never outside when we aren't there to supervise. They also get leash walked.

Daisy is crated when I'm not home and for meal times. Murphy can do whatever the heck he wants to LOL. While I'm home I use babygates and doors if I need to.

When no one is home Maddy and Muncie are crated; Wendell has free roam of the back half of the house and Cooper has free roam of the front half. There is a door that separates them. When I'm home everyone is out together but supervised; luckily I've never "had" to crate and rotate. :knocks wood: But I do watch & listen to them when they are together......if they start getting snippy with one another then all the fun stops and everyone has to chill out for a bit.
