DONALDSONVILLE - Authorities investigating claims of illegal dogfights at a McKinley Street residence found 29 pit bulls on the premises and arrested a 21-year-old man Wednesday, Louisiana State Police said in a news release.
Jarmine R. Gibson, 21, 1407 McKinley St., Donaldsonville was booked with dogfighting, aggravated cruelty to animals and resisting arrest, Trooper Johnnie Brown with State Police Troop A said.
A joint investigation by the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations, Louisiana Gaming Enforcement and the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office led to Gibson's arrest, Brown said.
Through undercover operations and information from confidential informants, authorities learned that Gibson had 12 pit bulls on his property that had suffered injuries consistent with taking part in dogfights, Brown said.
When officers went to Gibson's home Wednesday with a search warrant, they found the 29 pit bulls, Brown said.
The dogs were removed from the residence and turned over to the Louisiana Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Ascension Parish Animal Control, Brown said.
Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said Friday the number of animals and their conditions led to suspicions.
"It is easy when you catch the dog's fighting but it is a different situation when you are trying to build a case," Bacala said.
The Sheriff's Office assisted with initial information on the reservations to the Louisiana Gaming Enforcement several weeks ago and provided manpower in the execution of the search warrant, Bacala said.
"It is not illegal to own a large number of dogs," Bacala said.
Bacala did not say whether there were signs of actual dog fighting on the premises but said the dogs showed signs of dog fighting activity.
At least eight small hutch like cages believed to house the dogs are identifiable on the premises.
Bacala said no further arrests were made as of Friday.
Gibson remained in jail Friday, according to Bacala. Bond was set at $50,000 by Judge Alvin Turner.
If convicted, Gibson could face a fine between $1,000 and $25,000 and or sentenced to one to 10 years imprisonment, according to LA R.S. 14:102.5.
Brown could not be reached for further comment.
